Before American astronauts could successfully navigate the cratered, alien surface of the moon, they had to train on similar terrain here on Earth.

So, NASA blew up a large section of the Arizona desert.

The space agency used hundreds of pounds of dynamite and a few dozen tons of fertilizer to create craters in the Cinder Lake desert outside Flagstaff.

The craters were between five and 40 feet wide and they were placed with exacting standards, according to the photo blog Venue.

The 500-foot-by-500-foot stretch of desert required 313 pounds of dynamite and 13,500 pounds of fertilizer mixed with fuel oil.

The result was 47 craters that mirrored spot in the lunar region of Mare Tranquillitatis where the Eagle lander touched down on July 20 1969.

A second lunar simulation area was created that had 354 craters of varying size.

The cratered stretches of desert allowed prospective astronauts to practice driving a moon buggy prototype on the difficult terrain.

Photographers Geoff Manaugh and Nicola Twilley recently visited the Cinder Lake region that NASA spectacularly exploded and found that the craters have not withstood the shifting sands of time.

The massive pot-holes, created by NASA in the interest of space exploration, are nearly imperceptible today.

Some remain as only shallow divots in the earth. Most are gone entirely, having been swallowed up by the desert.
