On Saturday, Hyderabad got its first water ATM, which will provide clean and mineral rich water to the public, especially to those who cannot access it. Located at NTR Garden, it was inaugurated by Mayor, B. Rammohan.

By the end of this year, 200 more such water ATMs will be launched in the city, says Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

At these kiosks, water can be bought for ₹1 (glass), ₹2 (a litre), ₹5 (10 litres) and ₹10 (20 litres). The water will be 99 per cent clean, devoid of any sludge formation, and no chemicals are used in the process, Dinesh Reddy, Josab India manager, told Telangana Today.

The project was started by the GHMC and Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board in collaboration with Josab India and Nature Spring Eco Tap.

The GHMC was also planning to approach women self-help groups to promote the project in its first phase. The GHMC Commissioner, B. Janardhan Reddy told the publication that this concept will be introduced with a major focus on the poor areas of the city.

These water ATMs are slowly making their presence felt across the country. Other cities that have them include Nagpur, Bengaluru, Delhi and Gurgaon (Manesar).
