It is not as risky as people make you believe. 

Don't get me wrong. Its still riskier than marrying a non related person, sure. 

There was a study done in this. The conclusion was that while there is a universal 1.5% chance of birth defects in all cases, it increases to 3% if the offspring is from two first cousins. It is the same risk (3%) associated with a woman giving birth after 35.

3/100 doesn't represent prevalence. But sure, it is riskier and hence should be discouraged, just as we discourage women from giving birth after 35.
