INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE, 2018

What to look forward to in IPL 2018

Can Gautam Gambhir bring the much needed luck as Delhi Daredevils' skipper?

The IPL is back. The big names from around the world come together, friends will turn foe and vice versa for these two months. There's something for everyone in the Indian Premier League, because had it not been so, it couldn't have captivated the imagination of the public for as long as ten years. And as it steps into its 11th chapter, it's probably stronger than ever, or at least the biggest players in the broadcast market - Star India Pvt. Ltd. - think so, bagging the TV and digital rightsfor the next five years for INR 16347.5 crore. The poster boys of the tournament - Chennai Super Kings are back, as are the inaugural champions, Rajasthan Royals. Here's everything that's in store as the tournament enters an exciting new decade.

So what should one look forward to this IPL 2018?

The return of CSK and RR

The wait is finally over as arguably the most-celebrated franchise of the tournament marks a fresh guard after spending time on the sidelines following a suspension handed out over the betting charges against their team principal Gurunath Meiyappan. If one thought there could be some love lost in these two years, videos of CSK's practice sessions playing out in front of a 15,000-strong crowd dispelled any notion of a concern. Although the Chennai-based franchise might have lost out to Mumbai Indians who bagged their third crown last season in the title race, they have left no stone unturned in maintaining their heart-to-heart connect with the populace. The city's Thala, MS Dhoni, was retained as the leader and so was the core - Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis - along with him. Only time will tell if CSK can be once again be a force to reckon with, but there's little doubt that the sea of yellow and their whistles in tow will make their return a memorable affair.

Like CSK, RR too make a return, who were out with similar charges placed against co-owner Raj Kundra. But even before they make a return, they have been dealt with a body blow in the form of a ban spelt out to their original skipper Steven Smith in the wake of the infamous ball-tampering saga. However, they wouldn't let that steal their thunder as there are no few fortresses as strongly built as Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur - the best venue for any home side with RR enjoying a win-loss ratio of 2.67, the highest for any team. So if the whistles ring loud in Chepauk, there will be no less Halla in Jaipur.

Spotlight on new leaders

One of the most interesting spaces to follow will be how a few new leaders not just shape their fortunes but those of their teams too. Ravichandran Ashwin has never led in a T20 game and his leading of Kings XI Punjab, a team with a greatly different culture and vibe than the ones he's been accustomed to, will make for an interesting case study. Ashwin is not just an outsider, but will also be faced with the challenges of turning the fortunes around of a team that has not only won no titles but also has been at its poorest form in recent times. Similarly, a Kane Williamson is the stark opposite of David Warner, someone Sunrisers Hyderabad's recent success was attributed to. Honestly, there was a slim possibility for the New Zealander to make it to the first eleven but the situation right now is such that he will have to lift himself to the pedestal of leading the side, and by example.

Dinesh Karthik, too, isn't much different from the aforementioned captains. Karthik will walk into a team that has for long belonged to Gautam Gambhir, who didn't just break away from the Sourav Ganguly hangover but delivered two championships to the franchise. And now, Karthik will be expected to meet these lofty expectations and mix into a culture that the Knight Riders talk quiet highly about. Karthik, though, has experience of leading in the IPL, having skippered Delhi Daredevils in six matches across the 2010 and 2014 seasons. He has also led Tamil Nadu in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, winning 11 out of 12 games, while in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, he has seven wins and one loss as a captain.

Hello, DRS!

During the previous season, a substantial number of umpiring decisions were erroneous, to the extent that a few of the match officials would have done well to hide from the ever-so-in-your-face cameras. And while the debate - if IPL should adopt DRS - was at its all time high, it has finally been ratified by the board. Much of the faith has come through following a meeting at Visakhapatnam last year, between the board's top ten umpires and ICC umpires' coach Denis Burns. It is also believed that the board has warmed up to the technology after HawkEye created UltraEdge and increased the frame rates per second. So while there's much support and fanfare for the teams and its players, there's finally someone watching the umpires' backs.

Big faith and big money invested in the Under-19 winners

Since the first time IPL was played in 2008, India have won two Under-19 World Cups. Another U-19 title had arrived just a month ahead of the inaugural edition of the IPL in April 2008. The likes of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja among others were the first ones to be picked up for their maiden IPL stint. A similar script was followed when India won its next in 2012, under the leadership of Unmukt Chand, and the franchises gunned to include these young faces in their respective sides. However, never had money been splurged as it was earlier this year, following India's 2018 World Cup win. While the Man of the Final, Manjot Kalra, along with skipper Prithvi Shaw went to Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders took their futuristic aims to a different pedestal altogether by buying Man of the tournament, Shubman Gill, and the two pace-bowling sensations in Kamlesh Nagarkotti and Shivam Mavi. The collective purse spent on these five most popular names from this year's campaign was INR 9.2 crore. The money is big, so is the faith invested in them. Stakes are high too in an intense atmosphere like that of the IPL and the five youngsters will know that this could be their real big ticket to the big boys' league. They became overnight stars earlier this year, but can they sustain the stardom?

A whole new presentation

IPL gets a new home this season after Star India Pvt. Ltd. successfully pipped Sony Pictures Network to bag both TV and digital rights from 2018-2022 for a whopping global bid. For the past 10 years, Sony had become synonymous with the tournament, having ruled the living rooms all over the country and worldwide with its flagship show, Extra Innings. Bagging the deal was just half the job done as Star would know, since the bar set by the previous broadcasters is very high. Having already aired shows where franchises came out to announce their captains, Star has given a sneak-peek into their aggressive style of packaging. For a tournament that has always generated high TRPs, Star will look to milk this opportunity but the challenges are aplenty for every endeavour runs the risk of being compared to their predecessors. So while a whole new IPL-watching experience is upon us, Star's plans will go a long way in not just taking the legacy forward but also create one of their own.

Kagiso Rabada out of IPL 2018 due to back injury

Rabada will not be available for Delhi Daredevils
Rabada will not be available for Delhi Daredevils © BCCI

Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of IPL 2018 with a lower-back stress reaction. The South African fast bowler, retained by Delhi Daredevils using the Right To Match Card for INR 4.2 crores, felt tightness and discomfort during the Johannesburg Test of the recently-concluded Australia series. Subsequent scans revealed the injury, which will sideline the 22-year-old for up to three months.

Rabada's international season only finished on Tuesday morning, when he bowled just three overs on the final day of the Australia Tests and later admitted to feeling relieved that Vernon Philander had run through the Australian line-up so that he did not have to bowl.

"Something I have to think about and plan moving forward is how to have some time off," Rabada had said after the Test, citing concerns over his workload. "It is very important because you ultimately want to play for 10 to 15 years and you've got to have some sort of plan. You can't just drift through it."

He played all 10 Tests in South Africa's home summer as well as eight of their nine ODIs and sent down as many as 2326 deliveries across formats since South Africa's season began with the first Test against Bangladesh on September 28.

A replacement for Rabada will have to be approved by the IPL technical committee. Delhi Daredevils already have Trent Boult in their fast-bowling group with Indian options in Mohammed Shami and Avesh Khan. Chris Morris, Daniel Christian are other medium-pace all-rounders in the squad.

The Daredevils open their quest for a maiden IPL title on April 8 against Kings XI Punjab.
