CricPokChic
IPL 2018: Change in match-timings proposed, mid-season player transfers approved IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla also revealed that the IPL team owners have reacted positively to the idea mid-season player transfers. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 could bring in a couple of big changes in terms of match-timings and mid-season transfers. (Photo: BCCI) Mumbai: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 could bring in a couple of big changes in as it is now learnt that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen to change the timing of the start of the matches. Traditionally, the IPL games, when played in India, have either started at 4 P.M. or 8 P.M. However, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla, during the IPL Governing Council’s meeting earlier this month, had floated a proposal of 7 P.M. start of the matches. However, the plan will only go through if the broadcasters Star Sports approve the proposal. This is the same meeting after which it was emerged that the teams like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were averse to the idea of players’ retention, putting the MS Dhoni and co’s return to Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) in jeopardy. Read: 2 of the IPL team owners want players' auction to take place in England “It was just a thought (starting game at 7pm) and everyone welcomed it but first we need to speak to broadcaster and take their nod. We will work on modalities then. There have been many centers where traveling is major concern. All the issues were discussed and we all thought to start the game but early,” IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. Shukla also revealed that the IPL team owners have reacted positively to the idea mid-season player transfers. If the idea is put into practice, a player can make a move to another IPL team during the season is he has not got an opportunity to play for a side even once during the first seven games for that side. “Every IPL owner agreed to have this in forthcoming season. It will give chance to those players who are good but are not getting opportunities to be part of playing XI of any IPL side. We are having an IPL governing council meeting soon to finalize all these points,” added Shukla.
CricPokChic
IPL 2018 games set for earlier start Instead of starting at 8 pm and 4 pm, the games could start an hour earlier. There could be a massive change ahead of IPL 2018 What's the story? Conditional upon the approval from the broadcaster Star India, IPL games in the 2018 season could begin an hour early. Instead of the usual start times of 4 pm and 8 pm, the games will begin at 3 pm and 7 pm in a bid to ensure that games don't go beyond midnight, as was the case in a few games. Speaking to The Indian Express, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said: “It was just a thought (starting game at 7pm) and everyone welcomed it but first we need to speak to broadcaster and take their nod. We will work on modalities then. There have been many centers where traveling is major concern. All the issues were discussed and we all thought to start the game but early”. In case you didn't know... Since the inception of the IPL, the games have been played at 8 pm while the early games have started at 4 pm. As a result, several games have gone beyond midnight causing an issue for those attending the games and also for kids who are home, watching the game on a school night. The heart of the matter Another idea that all franchises seem to be keen on is having a mid-season transfer window to ensure that a player who hasn't played will have the opportunity to play for another team during the course of the tournament. That is if he has played two or less of the first seven games of the tournament and Shukla added that will also be on the agenda during the IPL governing council meeting.. “Every IPL owner agreed to have this in forthcoming season. It will give chance to those players who are good but are not getting opportunities to be part of playing XI of any IPL side” Shukla added. What's next? The IPL governing council will meet on December 5 to discuss several pressing issues ahead of the 11th edition of the tournament like player retention, start times and the possibility of mid-season transfers. Author's take The decision to start the games an hour earlier certainly makes a lot of sense, especially considering the fact that a few games used to go past midnight causing an issue for fans at the stadium and kids watching at home. While the decision to move the games an hour earlier sounds like a good move, the fact that the early games will begin at 3 pm will make it harder on players, especially consider that the matches will be played in peak summer in places like Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi. CricPokChic
Harsha Bhogle: While I like the idea of a 7pm start to IPL games, it would be impossible to have a 3 pm start in that heat. Wonder how strong appointment viewing is & whether single games can start at 7pm and double headers at 4pm/8pm

CricPokChic
IPL 2018: STAR India may be asked to share live cricket feed with Doordarshan Star India have bought the Indian Premier League rights for a world record fee of Rs 16,347.50 crore for five years. Public broadcaster Doordarshan is keen to show IPL matches live on its networks If the government has its way, the next season of IPL T20 cricket tournament will be available to viewers on state-run broadcaster Doordarshan. The information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry is working on a proposal to make live IPL matches available on Doordarshan and has asked the sports ministry to weigh in on the matter, three people in the know said on condition of anonymity. No orders have been passed on the proposal yet. The move will mean that Star India Pvt Ltd, the official broadcasters of IPL for the next five seasons beginning 2018, will have to share the live cricket feed with Prasar Bharati under the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007. Prasar Bharati runs Doordarshan and All India Radio. Star India, in September, won the television, digital, Indian and global media rights to IPL for the next five seasons, paying a record Rs 16,347.50 crore. Sony Pictures Networks held the rights for 10 years starting from 2008. “A proposal has been moved to make IPL a sporting event of national importance so that it can reach a wider audience through Doordarshan. The I&B ministry had asked the sports ministry to look into the proposal. No orders have been passed yet,” said one of the three people cited above. According to the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007 (and a 2012 notification), all private broadcasters are required to share live broadcasting signals of sporting events of “national importance” with Prasar Bharati simultaneously, to enable the public broadcaster to re-transmit them on its terrestrial networks and DTH networks.
