Ashish Nehra all set to join Royal Challengers Bangalore as mentor in IPL 2018: Report

Indian pacer Ashish Nehra, who has now retired from international cricket, ensured that there was no dearth of entertainement for his fans as days after hanging his boots, he started a new innings, as a commentator. With his close friend Virender Sehwag, Nehra Ji left the Indian spectators in splits with his sense of humour from the commentary box.

The Delhi pacer will now be seen back on the cricket field, as a mentor for Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. RCB, who are yet to win their maiden IPL title despite boasting of some of the finest players, are already said to have struck a deal with the veteran pacer.

As reported by Mumbai Mirror, Nehra informed his friends about his new assignment during the star-studded wedding reception of former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan recently. Nehra, along with Yuvraj Singh, was seen setting the dance floor on fire with his dance moves.

While there has been no official confirmation regarding Nehra's association with RCB, some of his close friends confirmed about the development to Mumbai Mirror. After Bharat Arun joining the Indian cricket team as bowling coach, and with Allan Donald no more being associated with RCB, the franchise is currently without a bowling coach, which means Nehra might have to take up that role as well.

Nehra, who is best remembered for his sensational 6/23 spell against England in at Durban in the 2003 World Cup, got a dream farewell as he hung up his boots in front of the home crowd at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium after playing the 1st T20 international against New Zealand in the recently concluded series.

Making his India debut back in 1999 under Mohammed Azharuddin, Nehra has represented India in 17 Tests, 120 ODIs and 27 T20 Internationals. He has picked 44 Test wickets, besides 157 ODI and 34 T20 scalps.

He was also a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad with a match-winning performance in the semi-final against Pakistan. He missed the final due to a finger fracture.

Brad Hodge appointed KXIP head coach

Brad Hodge has been appointed as the head coach of IPL side Kings XI Punjab. Hodge will report to former KXIP player Virender Sehwag, who now serves as the franchise's Director of Cricket.

Hodge, 42, is among the most sought-after personnel in T20 cricket for his immense body of work in the shortest format of cricket. He is one of just eight cricketers to aggregate more than 7000 runs in T20 cricket and remains an active player in franchise cricket. He will turn out for Melbourne Renegades in the forthcoming season of the Big Bash League.

Hodge occupied a similar coaching role with the now-defunct Gujarat Lions franchise. In his first season as coach, he guided the team to the top spot in the league phase of the tournament. Injuries hampered the Lions' season in IPL 2017 as they finished second from last, having picked up only four wins through the league phase.

At Kings XI, Hodge will be tasked with reversing a sorry statistic that has Kings XI as one one of only three original franchises (Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils the others) to have never won the IPL. Under Sanjay Bangar as head coach, the team made the finals of the 2014 season before falling away once more in the next two years. Bangar stepped down in 2016 with Sehwag taking over in a coaching-cum-mentoring role for 2017.

Jadeja hits six sixes in an over, 154 off 69 in SCA district tournament

When Ravindra Jadeja was left out of the ODI squad earlier this year, he slammed a double-century in his first Ranji Trophy innings of the season. Now, with the Sri Lanka limited-overs series ongoing, Jadeja - who has struck three first-class triple-centuries, the most by an Indian - stuck to the destructive pattern and struck six sixes in an over en route to a blistering century on the opening day of the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) inter-district T20 tournament.

Jadeja smashed a 69-ball 154 as Jamnagar brushed aside Amreli by 121 runs in their opening game at the Saurashtra Cricket Association 'B' ground in Rajkot. The win gave last year's semi-finalists Jamnagar four points.

Opening the batting with Divyaraj Chauhan, who has turned out for Saurashtra in seven first-class matches, Jadeja was dismissed only in the 19th over. In the 15th over, Jadeja launched a brutal assault against offspinner Nilam Vamja and carted six sixes in a row. Vamja ended up conceding 48 in two overs.

By the time Jadeja was run out in the 19th over, he had unleashed mayhem to propel Jamnagar's total to 239 for 6. He scored 120 off his 154 runs in boundaries - 15 fours and 10 sixes. Jadeja's efforts were supplemented by another Jadeja - Vishwaraj - who struck 39 off 23 balls.

The SCA inter-district T20 tournament features 16 teams divided into four groups. Jamnagar play their next game against Botad on Saturday.

Will DRS make its debut in IPL 2018?

  1. BCCI organized a DRS workshop in Vizag for 10 top Indian umpires outside the ICC panel
  2. After implementing the system in home international matches, it seems BCCI is planning to launch it in the IPL
  3. A top BCCI official said that 'nothing has been decided' about DRS' inclusion in IPL, but it can't be ruled out either
The Indian Board has gradually warmed up to the idea of using DRS in the country. (TOI Photo)The Indian Board has gradually warmed up to the idea of using DRS in the country.
VIZAG: BCCI's scepticism for the Decision Review System (DRS) seems a thing of the past. After implementing the system in home international matches, it seems the Board is planning to launch it in the Indian Premier League.

The BCCI, on Friday, organized a "first of its kind" DRS workshop headed by Denis Burns, ICC Umpires coach, and former Australian cricketer-turned-umpire Paul Reiffel in Vizag for 10 top Indian umpires outside the ICC panel. All could be in action during the IPL and it could well be BCCI's way of initiating them to the system.

A top BCCI official, though, said that "nothing has been decided" about DRS' inclusion in IPL, but it can't be ruled out either.

"This is the first time that such a DRS specific workshop has been conducted for BCCI umpires. Technology is definitely going to play a key role in umpiring decisions in the future. So there has to be awareness among the umpires regarding DRS. As of now, there hasn't been any decision taken on having DRS this IPL. But there's still time," an official told TOI.

It was learnt that Burns and Reiffel explained to the umpires about the intricacies of DRS. "Indian umpires who are officiating as fourth umpires in international matches should also be well versed with DRS protocols. Burns and Reiffel explained how the system works, the communication required during DRS calls and there was a simulation session as well. The workshop carried on for the entire day," said the official.
