CricPokChic
IPL 2018: CSK Set to Retain Dhoni, Raina, Jadeja; No Clarity on Ashwin Chennai: The Chennai Super Kings are all set to retain their core group including skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja for the upcoming 11th edition of IPL. However senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's chances of being picked through 'Right To Match' card looks bleak. "We have not yet submitted our retention list but it goes without saying that Dhoni and Raina are all but retained. The third retention in all likelihood will be Ravindra Jadeja," an IPL official, who is aware about CSK's team strategy said. The official also informed that CSK management is still undecided on whether to to go for their former player Ravichandran Ashwin, who is no longer in the Indian team management's radar as far as limited overs cricket is concerned. Ashwin has not played a T20 for over a year now and it remains to be seen if the franchise is ready to invest on a player, who is no longer a force to reckon with in the shortest format of the game. The only thing that might allow CSK to bid and go for the Right To Match (RTM) is his local connect being the most successful international cricketer to come out of Tamil Nadu. The emergence of young all-rounder M S Washington Sundar, as a potent off-spinner during the IPL 2017 has also made Ashwin's comeback chances in CSK fold bleak. West Indies' Dwayne Bravo is one foreign player, who can be expected to be bought through RTM card. The other foreign players, who are in fray are Faf du Plessis and Brendon McCullum. The IPL Governing Council had announced that a franchise could retain up to five players by virtue of a combination of player retention (pre-player auction) and right to match (RTM) (during the player auction). The sources said the franchise would send the list of retained players soon with the cut-off date for forwarding the wish-list is January 4, 2018. Jadeja hits six sixes in an over, 154 off 69 in SCA district tournament When Ravindra Jadeja was left out of the ODI squad earlier this year, he slammed a double-century in his first Ranji Trophy innings of the season. Now, with the Sri Lanka limited-overs series ongoing, Jadeja - who has struck three first-class triple-centuries, the most by an Indian - stuck to the destructive pattern and struck six sixes in an over en route to a blistering century on the opening day of the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) inter-district T20 tournament. Jadeja smashed a 69-ball 154 as Jamnagar brushed aside Amreli by 121 runs in their opening game at the Saurashtra Cricket Association 'B' ground in Rajkot. The win gave last year's semi-finalists Jamnagar four points. Opening the batting with Divyaraj Chauhan, who has turned out for Saurashtra in seven first-class matches, Jadeja was dismissed only in the 19th over. In the 15th over, Jadeja launched a brutal assault against offspinner Nilam Vamja and carted six sixes in a row. Vamja ended up conceding 48 in two overs. By the time Jadeja was run out in the 19th over, he had unleashed mayhem to propel Jamnagar's total to 239 for 6. He scored 120 off his 154 runs in boundaries - 15 fours and 10 sixes. Jadeja's efforts were supplemented by another Jadeja - Vishwaraj - who struck 39 off 23 balls. The SCA inter-district T20 tournament features 16 teams divided into four groups. Jamnagar play their next game against Botad on Saturday.
CricPokChic
IPL 2018: BANGALORE, KOLKATA FACE DIFFERENT DILEMMAS OVER THEIR CAPTAINS VIRAT KOHLI, GAUTAM GAMBHIR Royal Challengers, Knight Riders face different dilemmas over their captains - Kohli and Gambhir. To be or not to be... The Indian Premier League (IPL) version of the Bard's memorable line could well be: "To retain or not to retain..." Ask the managements of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the likely answer would be that they are facing the celebrated Hamletian dilemma. Although different in nature, the RCB and KKR woes start from the top -- Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir. Leaving out Kohli would not be easy for the Bangalore management for the simple reason of the player's profile. Kohli is the India skipper, a highquality performer and the most sellable brand. But that could come with a cost. It is expected that Kohli's retention value has to match his high stature. If a team were to retain one or two players, the guideline price for the top player is Rs 12.5. If the franchise goes for three players, the highest one player can get is Rs 15 crore. Were Kohli to be in the auction, what would be the highest bid? Not too long ago, Yuvraj Singh was sold for Rs 16 crore. The word in the IPL circle is that a few top IPL players have given their price tags to their respective franchises. Whether Kohli is one of them is a matter of speculation but the star batsman may well be worthy of Rs 25 crores. Now the tricky issue is the new IPL rule which states: "The deduction from salary purse in case of retention will be determined on the basis of guideline price or actual price (whichever is higher)." The whichever-is- higher clause was not in existence previously and Kohli was being paid Rs 15 crore and RCB had only Rs 12 crore cut from its purse. Now if RCB go for retention of three players - Kohli, AB de Villiers and Yuzvendra Chahal, the amount cut from the Rs 80 crore salary cap could be more than 50 per cent of the available fund. Can they cobble together 20 more players with about Rs 35-37 crores? Repeated questions to RCB officials on Kohli's retention value did not elicit a reply. The Gambhir issue As for Gambhir, it is a different dilemma. Having won two IPL titles, Gambhir is a high-achieving IPL captain not doubt but is he still a highquality player could be the question before the KKR management. With about 4100 runs, he is the fourth highest scorer in the IPL after Suresh Raina (4500+), Kohli (4400+) and Rohit Sharma (4200+) but the record loses some of some of its sheen if one were to look at his career strike rate of 120, the lowest among the highest scorers. In fact, his strike rate is the lowest among the top 20 players who have scored 2000 or more runs in the IPL. If KKR still has emerged as the winningest team under Gambhir, it is because of their bowling. In the last seven years since Gambhir took over, the average runs conceded by the team is the lowest in the league - 149. The bowlers seem to be doing better than batsmen in Kolkata. And that could be one of the reasons why the franchise could prefer all-rounders like Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, incidentally the batsman with highest strike rate (over 170), to retain. Coming back to Gambhir, what could be working against him is his age. Already 36, Gambhir is out of the Indian team. If the franchise wants to buy a player for three years, Gambir will be close to 40 by the time the three-year contract ends. The gossip in the IPL circle is that the KKR management will be looking at a younger captain. Actually, Mirror understands that discussions have taken place between Gambhir and KKR management over his future and team's future plans. Actually, sources have say that the KKR is willing to offer Gambhir the role of a mentor, on the lines of Stephen Fleming, Daniel Vettori, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who took up the mentorship of the sides they were playing for. But sources close to the player deny having any such talks. Full pictures should emerge by January 4, the deadline for the submission of retention list.
