CricPokChic
The 2018 IPL auction will be held on January 27 and 28, in Bangalore. That means the mega auction will coincide with the final two days of India's third Test on the tour of South Africa; Virat Kohli's team is scheduled to play the final Test of the South Africa tour from January 24-28 in Johannesburg. ESPNcricinfo understands that the IPL has asked all eight franchises to submit their final list of retained players by January 4. The IPL is likely to finalise the pool of players who will be up for auction around January 18. At the IPL Governing Council (GC) meeting, held on December 6, one of the members had expressed reservations about the auction clashing with the Johannesburg Test. Also some of the franchises were interested in seeing how the domestic players fared in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (India's domestic Twenty20 competition), which ends on January 28, ahead of the auction. The GC had also approved the retention rules at the same meeting. Franchises have been allowed retain a maximum of five of their existing players through a combination of player retention before the auction and the use of right-to-match cards during the auction. The IPL also set a salary cap of INR 80 crore (US$12.4 million approx) for every team, and made it clear that franchises will need to spend a minimum 75% of the purse. Of the five players, a franchise can retain a maximum of three through retention in the lead up to the auction, and a maximum of three through right-to-match cards during the auction. If a franchise does not retain any player before the auction, it can still retain only three using right-to-match cards. A right-to-match card gives the franchise the ability to buy back its player during the auction by matching the highest bid made for the player by another franchise, once the bidding is over. The other restrictions on player retention are: a maximum of three capped Indian players can be retained, and only two overseas players and two uncapped Indian players can be retained. CricPokChic
IPL 2018 Player Auction: MS Dhoni Says CSK Will Try To Retain R Ashwin CSK retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja, leaving Ravichandran Ashwin for the auction. The players' auction is scheduled for January 27 and 28 in Bengaluru.© BCCI Chennai Super Kings made good use of the Indian Premier League (IPL) retention policy by holding on to skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina. The CSK captain Dhoni on Friday said the franchise would be aiming to get Ravichandran Ashwin back in the fold in the upcoming IPL 2018 Players' Auction. The players' auction is scheduled for January 27 and 28 in Bengaluru. "As I have said it is always a tough call. With Ashwin, you know we had done the same thing in the past. We will definitely go for him (Ashwin) in the auction. Ashwin definitely being a local lad, we want a lot of local players to be part of CSK," Dhoni said. "We have two right-to-match options but having already retained three capped Indians, don't think we can use it. We will have to buy him out in the auction. As of now, it is tough to say, we will get him or him or him," Dhoni added. "Ashwin will come first in the auction for us. But we will have to wait and watch. We will try to get him," he added. He also stressed on the adaptability factor at the auction and said they would have to keep the emotions in check while picking the squad. "We have made three retentions. One keeper, two batsmen. Two batsmen that can bowl. As of now it is very difficult to say whom we will get. That is the adaptability factor that we need at the auction table and we need to keep emotions in check," he said. He also thanked the fans for their support and praised the franchise's management for backing the team. "Our biggest strength has always been the fans. All over wherever we have gone, CSK has got support. Even when we did not play in the IPL in the last two years, the fan base increased. "There is a lot of excitement among fans about the fact that CSK is back. The fans have over here have literally adopted me, they accept me as their own. I am touched by the admiration and ovation I receive from CSK fans, which will always remain close to my heart," Dhoni said. Dhoni said the focus at CSK was always on cricket and making sure the players did well in the opportunities they got. "We have always made sure that players who have played for CSK, even those who came from other franchises, for whatever reason, have performed well," he noted. Kool_SRG
Stokes, Gayle, Ashwin, Dhawan part of marquee set Ben Stokes, Mitchell Starc, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Yuvraj Singh, R Ashwin, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan and Glenn Maxwell are part of two sets of marquee players that will kick-off the IPL auction, which begins on January 27 in Bangalore. The auction will be a two-day exercise with a total of 578 players featuring in the player pool for the eight franchises to choose from. On Saturday the IPL announced the final auction pool, having pruned the original 1122-strong longlist by half. The auction pool has been divided into different sets based on the area of expertise of the player. The auction will begin with the two sets of maquee players going up for bidding. It is not entirely clear how the IPL filtered the marquee players. Ten out of 16 marquee players are over 30 years old while six are Indians. In addition to the above names, the other players featuring in the marquee sets include Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Joe Root, Shakib Al Hasan, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo and Kane Williamson. The marquee players will be followed by the first sets of capped players: batsmen, allrounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers and spinners in that order. In a marked changed from the past auctions, the IPL has decided to feature the uncapped players on the first day of the auction. In the past the uncapped category would come up towards the end once all the sets of capped players were exhausted. But this time the IPL has opted to mix both categories, keeping in mind the wide interest among franchises for uncapped Indian players including Baroda allrounder Krunal Pandya, who has been listed 85th in the shortlist. Krunal, who played for Mumbai Indians until last season, was the player of the final as Mumbai won the title for the third time. Krunal is a favourite to be retained by the defending IPL champions through the right-to-match card option. Mumbai still have two right-to-match cards available to them, which they might use for Krunal and Pollard, who has been with the franchise since 2009. Incidentally, Afghanistan legspinner Rashid Khan, who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, will only come up for bidding during the latter half of the first day of the auction. Rashid is part of the seventh set of players, which could possibly help Sunrisers as they could buy him through the right-to-match card option for a potentially lower price, in case other franchises spend big money on players from the previous sets. India fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who went unsold last season before joining Kings XI Punjab as a replacement player, is part of the first set of fast bowelrs. Ishant has listed his base price at INR 75 lakh. Also featuring in this set are the Indian fast-bowling pair of Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, Kagiso Rabada (South Africa), Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood and MItchell Johnson (all Australia), Mustafizur Rahman (Bangladesh), Tim Southee and Mithcell McCleneghan (both New Zealand) and Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka). The South African fast-bowling pair of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel are also part of this set. Neither featured in the IPL last season, with Steyn recovering from a shoulder injury and Morkel preserving himself to stay fit for Test cricket. Also in the final list is the 17-year-old Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane. He was one of the nine players to have been requested by the franchises after the longlist was announced recently. The others in the list include Hamza Tariq (Canada), Samit Patel (England), Mohammed Asaduddin (Hyderabad), Midhun S (Kerala), Abhinav Manohar (Karnataka), Ben Wheeler (New Zealand), Mohsin Khan (Uttar Pradesh) and Javon Searles (West Indies)

CricPokChic
IPL Auction 2018: 5 players with a surprising base price Ahead of the auction in Bengaluru, several players have made some interesting choices. #1 Colin Munro - 50 lakhs Colin Munro is currently the No.1 ranked T20I batsman in the world. No batsman has hit more T20I centuries than the Kiwi star and the 30-year-old still has a base price of just 50 lakhs, when he is likely to be one of the most sought-after players in the auction in Bengaluru. A strike rate of almost 150 after 150 T20Is speaks volumes about the southpaw's ability to take the game away from the opposition. In the last 12 months, he has been in blistering form in T20s across various domestic leagues and he will undoubtedly be one of the most expensive foreign players. And despite all of this, he has a base price of just 50 lakhs, well below the base price of the likes of Travis Head (150 lakhs) and Colin Ingram (200 lakhs). #2 Harry Gurney - 1.5 crore Gurney was sensational for the Outlaws in last year's T20 Blast The 31-year-old left-arm seamer enjoyed a successful Natwest T20 Blast Finals Day with Nottinghamshire as he picked up seven wickets in two matches and helped his side claim the title in 2017. But Harry Gurney, who has never played in a domestic T20 tournament outside England, has surprised everyone by not just putting his name on the list ahead of IPL Auction 2018 but also with his base price of 150 lakhs. While Gurney is an experienced T20 campaigner, having played 99 matches, his record is not extraordinary. In fact, an economy rate of almost 8 is on the higher side and while he does have plenty of variations and the left-arm angle, he isn't exceptional with either the new ball or at the death. With that being the case, few would consider picking up Gurney, especially with such a high base price and the fact that he is relatively inexperienced in conditions outside of England. #3 Nathan Lyon - 1.5 crore Lyon has enjoyed a lot more success in whites than in coloured clothing It was surprising to see Nathan Lyon go with a base price of 150 lakhs ahead of IPL Auction 2017 and unsurprisingly he went unsold. One year later, the Australian spinner has opted to go with the same base price and it would be a huge surprise if he gets picked this time around. While it is true that he is Australia's best spinner, majority of his success has been in Tests and he hasn't played an ODI for Australia since August 2016 and has played just one T20I in his career. He has played more than five times as many Tests as he has in the shorter formats for Australia (13 ODIs and 1 T20I compared to 74 Tests). A decent record in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers and a career T20 economy rate of just over 7 are good but not enough to command a base price of 1.5 crore. And it looks like the 30-year-old might find it difficult to find any suitors for him this time around as well. #4 Jason Holder - 1.5 crore Jason Holder is unlikely to claim an IPL team with his huge base price Considering the plethora of West Indian all-rounders that teams have to choose from, it is surprising to see that Jason Holder has opted to go with a base price of 150 lakhs. Especially considering the fact that he had the same base price last year and was one of the players who went unsold. While the 26-year-old is a solid all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball, the availability of so many alternatives, especially cheaper ones who can make a bigger impact in T20s, means he is unlikely to fetch too many suitors. A career T20 bowling economy rate of almost 8 and batting average of under 15 aren't what you look for in a game-changing all-rounder. So it looks as though Holder is likely to go without an IPL team for another season. #5 Peter Handscomb - 1.5 crore Handscomb is not the greatest shot-maker going around Considering the number of all-rounders that have graced the game since the advent of T20s, the market for middle-order batsmen who don't score at a rapid pace has gone down considerably. That is precisely what makes Peter Handscomb's decision to list himself with a base price of 150 lakhs when he hasn't played a T20I for Australia and isn't a regular in the national side all the more surprising. His record in T20s is far from impressive. In 50 matches, he averages just over 20 and has a strike rate under 120. He doesn't have a range of innovative strokes that can make the bowlers change their plans nor is he an explosive batsman who can clear the boundary at will. He doesn't open the innings so for a middle-order batsman, who isn't a finisher to command such a price is going to be highly unlikely.
