Hyderabad Metro pillars to showcase Telangana pride

HMR authorities are roping in artists and firms to use them as canvas to unfold the State's history and heritage

Hyderabad: The mammoth pillars that dot the corridors of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) will not only facilitate coaches to chug along and help commuters travel in comfort and with speed, but will also showcase the rich and varied heritage of Telangana.

HMR authorities are in the process of roping in artists and firms to use these plain pillar spaces as a canvas to unfold the State’s history and heritage in rich and vivid colours. Using different art forms including murals, the initiative will also have the pillars of Metro Rail depicting the flora and fauna and monuments of the State.

Presently, most of these pillars sport advertisement boards promoting different products and services. In addition to these, the authorities have planned to put these to use for promotion of the State’s heritage and culture.

Artists were invited to come up with works with different themes to design and paint in a medium of their choice, mosaic, terracotta, ceramic etc. “They can come up with a subject of their choice whether it be monuments, wildlife or landscapes,” said an official.

Two of the four sides of the pillars facing the traffic will be used for the purpose while the other two faces will go for advertisement boards, he said.

To begin with, HMR intends to launch a pilot project on the Jubilee Hills-Hitech City stretch covering 100 pillars. Depending on the feedback for the project, efforts will be made to emulate it on the stretches across the three corridors of the Metro.

The idea is to make the Metro add a new aesthetic touch to the city’s ambience. Since the Metro pillars are covering major stretches, they will come in handy in enhancing the city’s landscape, besides helping spread information on the State’s culture and history, the official added.

Hyderabad: Loitering on Metro to cost
Hyderabad: Smart cards to be issued to Hyderabad Metro Rail passengers can track the time they spend on the platform and in travelling. If they are found to be staying beyond a certain time, money will be deducted from the card.

This means that instead of paying for one trip, dilly-dallying at the station would cost the passenger a second trip.

A senior officer who is involved in costing said, “This is being done to control the crowd in the paid-entry areas, and to ensure that no one is wasting time on the platform or inside the train.”

The platfrom has two levels. The unpaid first level will be used as a walkway and will house commercial outlets and ATMs where there are no restrictions. Passengers can enter the paid level by swiping the ticket/card and go through a security check. The calculation of time begins at this stage.

After the card is swiped, the passenger has to climb to the second level to the platform where the train arrives, board it and travel. The time the passenger leaves the destination station can be tracked. Those who do not check out in a reasonable time will be docked the cost of another trip.

“We are doing this to avoid nuisance. If the passengers want to use the card to travel to and fro, they are welcome but the price will be known to them through the deductions or when they are charged at the end of the journey.”

These aspects are being worked out as the cost of the ticket is being finalised. L&T Metro Rail is finalising the prices and will send it to Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited for discussion

Hyderabad Metro Rail to start chugging with 18 trains

Focus on to ensure average ridership stays between 45,000 and 50,000 a day.

By AuthorS. Sandeep Kumar | Published: 6th Nov 2017 12:05 am    Updated: 6th Nov 2017 12:52 am

Hyderabad: Commercial operations of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR), which is set to launch on November 28, are likely to take off with 18 trains. The number of trains, however, would be increased gradually depending on ridership.

Accordingly, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is making efforts to complete all construction works before commencing the commercial operations so that a comfortable journey can be offered to commuters.

Metro services – as seen in other States — start off with a few trains and the number of trains is increased gradually depending on the occupancy. Many metros, which commenced commercial operations covering short distances, record high ridership of about 45,000 passengers a day, a senior HMR official said.

Out of curiosity and to witness the train services and facilities offered, commuters turn up in large numbers during the initial days. The ridership slowly declines and this was seen in other Metros in the country. A few Metros, which started off with a ridership of 45,000-50,000 a day, today register an average of about 35,000 passengers a day, he said. “In Hyderabad, we want to ensure that the average ridership remains between 45,000 to 50,000 a day,” the official said.

Making a presentation on Intelligent Transport System on the second day of the Urban Mobility India conference here, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation CGM DK Sinha said the train services are operated as per the demand and passenger ridership.

At present, over 27 lakh passengers use the Delhi Metro every day. The ridership is constantly monitored and rakes are added accordingly. During the rush hour it is generally high and declines during non-peak hours. The ridership during non-peak hours is monitored for four days and rakes are added or removed to suit passenger requirements, he said.

HMR, meanwhile, is all set to be inaugurated on November 28, during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the city for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, said Deputy Chief Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali while speaking at the Urban Mobility event here on Saturday.
