I knew how distraught & shocked she must have been. The last thing she needed was a call from a recruiter. I waited a week to call her to provide my condolences. So I called. An older man picks up the phone. He stated she is not home. I stated, “Please let Sara know that Gail called & I am for the loss of her dad” He stated, I am her dad. I said “Is this Sara Doe’s house”. The man said, yes, this is “Sara Doe’s house”. I was perplexed & gave her the benefit of the doubt. I thought maybe she had someone else in her life that she perceived as a father figure. I said “I must have misunderstood, I am sorry. Well, I am for the loss of your family member” He said, “ I am sorry. There were no deaths of any family or friends, she lied to you” I was irate. This excuse was beyond my dog ate my homework. This was 2 years into my recruiting career & it started to make me cynical (this is how recruiter bias can start) Candidates: don’t lie. If you are no longer interested in the job, just say so.
