2 Jawans Killed, Terrorist Shot Dead In Jammu And Kashmir

Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Pampore in south Kashmir today evening following information about the presence of some terrorists there

SRINAGAR:  Two soldiers were killed and a CRPF jawan suffered injuries during a gunfight that broke out between terrorists and security forces in Pulwama district in south Kashmir today, police said. 

The security forces shot dead a terrorist at Samboora in Pulwama, officials said. Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Samboora village of Pampore area this evening following information about the presence of some terrorists there, the officials said.

As the security forces were conducting searches, the terrorists opened fire, they said, adding that a gunfight ensued as the forces retaliated.

Two Army soldiers were killed in the operation, the officials said. A CRPF jawan too suffered injuries.

A BJP youth leader, Gowhar Ahmad Bhat, 25, was abducted and killed by militants in Shopian district of South Kashmir on Thursday, police said.
A police officer said Bhat was abducted from his home in Shopian town around 6 pm. His body, with the throat slit, was later recovered from a nearby village.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Inspector General of Police, South Kashmir, S P Pani said an investigation was being carried out. “Body found with throat slit. Price we pay in our fight against terrorism. Deep condolences. These sacrifices make our determination stronger,’’ tweeted BJP general secretary Ram Madhav.

Condemning the killing, senior BJP leader and legislator Surinder Ambardar said: ‘’This killing is unfortunate. We condemn this cowardly act. The innocent, young political worker represented the youth’s aspirations… it will not be tolerated.’’

BJP leader and media coordinator Altaf Thakur said Bhat had joined the party three years ago, and was a dedicated youth leader. “Recently, he played a pivotal role in organising the BJP’s successful youth convention in Srinagar… This could be a reason why he was killed.’’

Former Chief Minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah tweeted: “How tragic. A young life snuffed out in such a heartless way just adds to the sense of shock. Allah jannat naseeb karey.’’

A militant and two army soldiers were killed in a gunfight in Samboora village of Pulwama district on Thursday, even as two other militants are believed to have escaped from the encounter site.

A senior police official said that following a “specific input” about presence of militants in Samboora, a joint team of army’s 50 Rashtriya Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force and J&K police cordoned off the area and started searches.  The militants, hiding in a residential house, resorted to “indiscriminate” firing on the forces which was retaliated to, triggering a gunfight in which a militant and a soldier were killed initially, the official said.

 

Another soldier was killed at a later stage of the fierce gun-battle, he said.

The identity of the slain soldiers and the militant couldn’t be immediately ascertained.

A source said that the operation was called off late on Thursday night after two militants were believed to have escaped from the gun-battle site, apparently taking advantage of darkness and civilian protests around.  

 

As the word about the gunfight spread, people from adjoining areas including Kakapora, Galander and Pampore marched towards the encounter site and clashed with the government forces, a witness said.

“The protesters tried to break the cordon to help the militants flee, but forces fired teargas shells to disperse them,” the witness added.

Locals said that sounds of big blasts were heard in the area till late Thursday night.

A group of locals said some people, including photojournalists, sustained injuries in the clashes. They said internet services were snapped across Pulwama following the gunfight.
