OPT Ext question

Hi,

My friend got his OPT extension approved in January 2017. Its valid till Feb 2019. He applied for H1b  this year and unfortunately petition got denied today. What happens to his OPT extension once H1b gets picked?

Is his underlying OPT Extension still valid ?

OR

Do he need to do anything like ask university to update SEVIS?
