Bumrah earns maiden Test call-up for SA tour

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has earned a maiden call-up to the India's Test squad, after being named in the 17-member team for the three-Test series against South Africa, which starts from January 5 in Cape Town. Wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel has also been recalled, as back-up wicket-keeping option for Wriddhiman Saha.

Bumrah can be seen as radical choice mainly because he has not played first-class cricket in nearly a year. His last appearance in whites was when he turned up for Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Jharkhand in January this year. However, the fast nature of pitches at the three Test venues in South Africa - Cape Town, Centurion and Johannesbur - meant that the selectors were keen to have a fifth specialist fast bowler despite the presence of Hardik Pandya as a allrounder. Bumrah's ability to swing the ball into the right-hander, his searing pace, his crushing and accurate yorkers and his bowling smartness pushed him quickly ahead in the selection queue. His recent form was also not lost on the selectors. In limited-overs cricket Bumrah has been spectacular this year: with 35 wickets, he is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in ODIs in 2017.

Given the emphasis on pace, India opted for two frontline spinners in R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Hardik Pandya, who had been rested for the Sri Lanka Tests to reduce the risk of injury, has also returned to the squad as expected.

Parthiv's recall, too, was on expected lines, considering India's need for a specialist back-up for the wicketkeeper's slot and his ability to move up and down the batting order. He last played a Test for India against England in Chennai in December 2016.

India team: Virat Kohli (capt), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-capt), Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah.

India opt out of warm-up game ahead of SA Tests

India have opted for training sessions instead of a warm-up fixture in South Africa, in the lead-up to the first Test between the two teams from January 5 in Cape Town. A press release from Cricket South Africa on Monday announced India's decision.

Although the BCCI did not give any reason officially for dropping the warm-up match, it is understood the request was made by the team management well in advance. The board was told that the team management preferred to focus on training on their own as soon as it landed in South Africa on December 28. A team official confirmed the development, but declined to elaborating further, saying it was an "internal matter".

The Indian team management's preoccupation with acclimatising the players to South African conditions even before they set foot in the country has been such that "lively green tops" were deemed the need of the hour through the Sri Lanka Test series at home.

There had been some confusion over the schedule for India's tour of South Africa, with both boards holding discussions since the beginning of the year. In August, the BCCI had made it clear to CSA that India would not arrive until at least the last week of 2017, because their home series against Sri Lanka ends on December 24.

The BCCI wanted its players to take a short break before they departed for South Africa, ruling India out of the traditional Boxing Day Test, which South Africa will now play over four days against Zimbabwe. Eventually, even the New Year's Test which is traditionally played from January 2 in Cape Town was pushed back to January 5. Incidentally, in September, an official involved in the discussions told ESPNcricinfo that India would "definitely play one practice match before the first Test".

Following the Cape Town Test, two more will be played in Centurion and Johannesburg, followed by six ODIs and three T20s.
