'Change Needed, It Is Time': Rajinikanth Announces New Party - 10 Facts

Actor Rajinikanth is addressing supporters in Chennai on joining politics

CHENNAI:  The decade-long suspense over whether Rajinikanth would enter politics ended today, with the superstar's promised announcement made amid frenzied cheers of hundreds of supporters. "I will come into politics. I will do my duty," the 67-year-old declared in Chennai on the last of his six-day outreach to fans. Pointing to what he called a low in Tamil politics over the last year, he said, "If I don't make this decision now, then I will have let people down, the guilt will haunt me". The death of AIADMK's iconic leader Jayalalithaa last December is seen to have left a vacuum in Tamil Nadu politics. Recently, the other big actor, Kamal Haasaan, had made his anticipated debut.

  1. Pointing to the situation over the last one year, Rajinikanth said, "Over the past one year, the events in Tamil Nadu have put the state to shame. People are laughing at Tamil Nadu".
  2. Underscoring the need for a change, Rajinikanth said he would form a new party. "Everything needs to change, the time is here. We will change the system. I want to bring good governance."
  3. The actor, who enjoys almost demigod status among his legion of followers, said he wants not cadres but "watchdogs" at this stage.
  4. "I will be the head of these watchdogs... We should rope in all people in every village.  This is my first task for you. Let's not plunge into the political pond till then. At the appropriate time before assembly polls, we shall explain our policies and promises," he told his supporters in Chennai's  Raghavendra Mandapam.
  5. Posters have come up in Chennai that say if Rajinikanth takes the political plunge, he will be the next chief minister. "From 12-12-2017, we are all not his fans, we are all his cadre," Abdul Mallik, a fan, told NDTV.
  6. Earlier this week, the 67-year-old had given the strongest indication yet of his plans, saying entry into politics needed proper planning for  a winning strategy. "I am not new to politics. I'm there since 1996. I will announce my stand on politics on December 31," he had said.
  7. For months, the superstar, whose fans call him "Thalaivar" or "Ultimate Boss", has been cryptic about his plans. His pronouncement in May led to a frenzy - "If God wills it, I will enter politics tomorrow". In October, it was his wife Lata Rajinikanth who predicted that a "lot of change" would happen when her husband joins politics.
  8. The other actor in Tamil Nadu mulling a new day job, Kamal Haasan, had made the announcement last month. His first step was going to be a whistle-blower app that he had declared would be ready for launch by January, around the same time that he begins his tour to different parts of the state.
  9. In 1996 Rajinikanth had asked the people to support the DMK government and not its charismatic opponent J Jayalalithaa, famously declaring, "Even God can't save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa comes back to power again". The DMK swept the state polls in 1996 but later the superstar later described as "a mistake and an accident".
  10. Earlier this week, Ms Jayalalithaa's party, the ruling AIADMK, failed to retain her RK Nagar seat and lost it to sidelined rebel TTV Dhinakaran, the nephew of Jayalalithaa's closest aide VK Sasikala.

lol. They won't vote because he hasn't been in the public sphere and doesn't have concrete ideology or policies.

not because he was not tamil. The last Tamil CM of TN was more than 50yrs ago.
