NAFTA and TN Visa is almost gone : Trump to cancel the treaty soon

Canadian government officials say there’s an increasing likelihood that the U.S. will give six months’ notice to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement, according to separate reports from Reuters and Bloomberg. The Canadian dollar and the Toronto stock index fell on the news.The Loonie closed at an average trading price of 80.03 cents US, down 0.27 of a U.S. cent. If NAFTA is cancelled, more than 100,000 Canadians and their families working in the United States may be denied re-entry at the border if they leave for any reason. For those who do not leave the country for work or other purposes, they will most likely have a sunset clause till natural expiry of their visas. In contrast, Canada only has 17,000 American TN Visa holders and around 30% of them in senior management roles who could quickly migrate to other visas. An American CEO of a Canadian company in Canada has less to worry about than a Management Consultant on TN Visa in the United States. While a roll back of NAFTA will surely negatively impact businesses and trade, the real elephant in the room that everyone ignored and continues to ignore is the TN Visa.
