SP-BSP alliance may come under strain after BJP snatches Mayawati's Rajya Sabha seat

n an election marred by cross-voting, the BJP finally emerged victorious for the ninth seat of Rajya Sabha in Uttar Pradesh for which bitter tussle took place today.

The fight was between BJP-led NDA on the one side and SP-BSP-Congress combine on the other. The BJP has managed to avenge the defeat of its candidates in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypolls at the hands of the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party and Akhilesh Yadav-headed Samajwadi Party.

The result has come as a major setback for the SP-BSP combine which was hoping to repeat the result of the Lok Sabha bypolls.

The NDA, with 324 MLAs, comfortably sent eight candidates, including Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. The SP, with 47 MLAs, also easily got its candidate Jaya Bachchan elected to the Upper House. BJPs ninth candidate Anil Agarwal was a bonus for the party.

However, the BSP was the loser as its candidate Bhimrao Ambedkar got defeated in the cut throat election which saw disqualification of two votes one vote each of the NDA and BSP.

The SP-BSP-Congress combine suffered a setback on Thursday itself with two of their MLAs not getting relief from courts to take part in today's voting.

Their problem was compounded when Nitin Agarwal of the SP and Anil Singh of the BSP cross-voted for the BJP candidates. Nitin is the son of former SP leader Naresh Agarwal who switched over to the BJP earlier this month. Peeved over the denial of a Rajya Sabha ticket from SP, he crossed over to the BJP.

According to sources, one MLA of the BJP's ally Suheldeo Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) also cross-voted for the BSP candidate.

With today's Rajya Sabha result, Uttar Pradesh now has three heavyweight leaders in the BJP-led NDA government at the centre Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Jaitley.

IMPACT ON SP-BSP ALLIANCE

Besides, the result has put a question a question mark over the continuation of the alliance between SP and BSP till the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

Apprehending cross-voting and defeat of her candidate, Mayawati is learnt to have asked Akhilesh Yadav to allot 10 "khaanti (committed)" SP MLAs for her party nominee Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

However, that does not seem to have happened. The SP MLAs appeared to have been more committed towards their candidate Jaya Bachchan.

This has the chances of straining the new-found bonhomie between Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav.

It would be a challenge before Akhilesh to convince the circumstances under which the BSP candidate lost. If he succeeds, well and good. Otherwise, the alliance would see a premature break.

THE NUMBER GAME

The numbers did not favour either the BJP or the SP-BSP-Congress combine. But BJP president Amit Shah succeeded in turning the tide.

He had witnessed a defeat in a similar situation in Gujarat last year. After a nail-biting finish, the then Congress president Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel had managed to pull off a victory in the Rajya Sabha election.

But Amit Shah ensured that the BJP does not taste another defeat.

With today's results, Amit Shah has avenged two defeats the Gujarat Rajya Sabha election last year and the UP Lok Sabha bypolls.

YOGI CONGRATULATES CANDIDATES

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated all MLAs of BJP and allies. He said that it was major victory for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

I am thankfull all the party workers, SBSP chief Rajbhar and other allies for the victory of NDA candidates in the Rajya Sabha polls, said Yogi.

but ippudu kakapote inppatlo chance radhu vallaki

chance kadu brother....here is the thing..

there are 400 seats in UP. SP nundi 400 candidates, BSP nundi 400 candidates hopefuls vunnaru....these 800 candidates have been spending money and getting ready for elections which is one year away....remember, caste plays a major role for both these parties..

Now, if the alliance happens and say SP contests 200 seats and BSP contests 200 seats, what about the remaining 400 hopefuls who were waiting in line ? Secondly, as caste is huge factor and if these castes are not represented properly, the threat of rebels will increase and over shadow the prospects of alliance, and there would be feeling that some castes are not represented properly expecially dalits who will loose 200 seats atleast at the same time, Yadavs also may loose 50-60 contesting seats...DO you think these people will allow the vote trasnfer smoothly  ? If its a by-election, there could be internal understanding projecting a common enemy but if its s state wide alliance, threat of losing is more ...

Remember the alliance between TDP and TRS ? Its good on paper but when it comes to vote transfer, it did not happen properly because regional issues and caste issues. SP and BSP alliance is also similar.

Yadavs will never vote for BSP...neither dalits will vote for SP...MUslims are mostly with SP and averse to vote for SP...
