Parents in Texas arrested after they ‘poured boiling hot oil on teenage daughter who refused arranged marriage’

Parents of a teenage girl who was reported missing in January have been arrested for allegedly abusing her when she refused an arranged marriage.

Police in Texas say Abdulah Fahmi Al Hishmawi, 34, and Hamdiyah Saha Al Hishmawi, 33, subjected their 16-year-old daughter Maarib Al Hishmawi to ‘some pretty bad abuse’.

The teenager was reported missing in late January after she was last seen leaving Taft High School in Bexar County but was located in March when she was taken care of by an organisation.

Maarib had reportedly run away from home after her parents allegedly beat her with a broomstick and poured hot cooking oil on her when she refused the marriage.

Police say her parents agreed to the arranged marriage in exchange for £14,000.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told KSAT: ‘This young lady, at various times over that time period was subjected to some pretty bad abuse because she didn’t want to be married to this person.

‘Several times it was reported to us that this young lady was abused with hot cooking oil being thrown on her body. She was beat with broomsticks.

Her parents face charges of continuous violence against a family member, while the man who was arranged to be married to their daughter may also be charged.

Maarib and her five siblings, aged between five and 15, have been placed under the custody of Child Protective Services.
