A family of four who disappeared on a West Coast road trip may have been swept away into a river in Northern California.

Sandeep and Soumya Thottapilly and their children, 12-year-old Siddhant and 9-year-old Saachi, were driving from Portland, Oregon, home to Southern California last week, according to the San Jose police and according to ABC station KGO in San Francisco.

They were expected to stop at a family member's home in San Jose, California, on Friday, but they never showed up and haven't been seen or heard from since Thursday, police said.

The family was in a maroon/burgundy 2016 Honda Pilot with California license plate 7MMX138, police said.

On Friday, the California Highway Patrol said, authorities received a report of a vehicle leaving Highway 101 and descending a steep embankment as torrential rain fell in the area, which is populated by two state parks. This was just after 1 p.m., according to state police.

When emergency personnel arrived, the vehicle was submerged, and the strong current and poor clarity hampered search efforts, police said. Helicopters were brought in, but to no avail.

On Tuesday, the Garberville office of the California Highway Patrol established a multijurisdictional search team.

"All available resources are being utilized by searching personnel," state police said in a statement. "Through the collaborated efforts of all the involved agencies we are working to resolve this incident as quickly and safely as possible."

The site of the reported accident is roughly 30 miles up the coast from where an SUV carrying another family plunged off a cliff last month onto a rocky Pacific Coast shoreline along a remote stretch in Mendocino County.

Searchers along the Eel River Sunday found a submerged vehicle and the bodies of a Santa Clarita man and his 9‑year‑old daughter, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

A body found Friday in the river was identified Saturday as Soumya Thottapilly, 38, the wife of driver Sandeep Thottapilly, 41, and mother of Saachi, who were recovered Sunday inside the family’s Honda Pilot.

Still missing is the couple’s son, Siddhant Thottapilly, 12.

The family’s maroon SUV was seen falling into the river in northern Mendocino County during an April 6 rainstorm. They’d been traveling south from Oregon along Highway 101 when the crash occurred, officials said.

Sunday 70 searchers, many using Jet Skis, boats and kayaks worked along the river in an ongoing effort to find the vehicle and family.

About 11:30 a.m. a boating team smelled gasoline about ½‑mile from the crash site and found a vehicle about 4‑6 feet under the surface, officials said in a news release.

The vehicle was encased in sediment and visibility was poor but divers believed there was at least one body inside, officials said. About 6:30 p.m. a tow truck was able to partially pull the vehicle out and the man and girl were found.

Searchers will continue Monday looking for the boy.
