I think in those days there was more women to men ratio. If husband died that woman had no protection from society which would lead to kids who dont know their father.  There were no proper medical precautions too. Anduke may be they thought widow ala batakadam kante death is less painful. Psyche of women in those days was also like that. That could be reason why they did sati sahagamanam which is out right brutal but a time lo it might have made sense to those societal situations. I have no logic to support this argument its just a guess however vedas lo ledu sati sahagamanam.
