may be his assuption was you can save some ssn and medicare on opt but if you are in h1b you need to pay them..those days people used to think like that..but not anymore..

waht ever you said was correct but not 70k may be 10k to 20k  depends on your billing rate that time...suppose if you save 500(for ssn and medicare permonth) you will save 12kplus not more than that..

as per my exp the only diff i see in between opt and h1b taxes is (ssn and medicare) beacuse there is not differentiation on satte and federal taxes between  H1B and opt..may be you are right.this is what i remmeber..
