IPL 2019: Blow for Mumbai Indians as Jasprit Bumrah likely to be given ample rest ahead of World Cup

Mumbai Indians speedster Jasprit Bumrah is likely to sit out a fair portion of the IPL 2019 season as the BCCI looks to give him ample rest ahead of the start of the following World Cup in England.

Indian captain Virat Kohli had recently expressed his desire to have the key pacers rested in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 season ahead of the World Cup in England. It seems that the BCCI is set to follow the skipper's wish and speak to the franchises about the same. Jasprit Bumrah, who is a key member of the Indian team across formats, is one of the biggest names whose participation in the IPL 12 with Mumbai Indians is set to be affected because of the World Cup.

A BCCI official recently told The Times of India that the board would need to prepare ample data regarding the pacer's workload and then have a word with MI to ensure that the 25-year-old is appropriately used in the IPL and remains fit and fresh for the World Cup.

“For someone of Virat’s stature, he can take a call himself and discuss with his franchise about his workload. However, for Bumrah, the Indian team’s support staff will need to prepare all the relevant data so that we can have a discussion with MI if the situation arises,” a BCCI official told PTI.

"Obviously, if he is fit, he will play all important matches for MI but in between, with such a hectic travel schedule during IPL, it will be great if he is rested keeping the World Cup in mind," the official further added.

Soon after Kohli had expressed the desire to have the key pacers rested in the 2019 IPL season, MI captain Rohit Sharma differed with his opinion, saying he cannot afford to rest Bumrah if Mumbai reach the IPL playoffs.

Even former skipper MS Dhoni had recently cited IPL as the right platform to get the players prepared for the World Cup, while also agreeing that it's important to manage the workload of the players properly.

After India's win over Australia in the 3rd Test at Melbourne, Kohli had lauded Bumrah as the best bowler in the world after he bagged 9 wickets in two innings to give the tourists a 2-1 lead in the 4-match series.

IPL 2019 not to be held in India? BCCI seriously considering hosting season 12 elsewhere: Report

The BCCI are reportedly seriously considering hosting the Indian Premier League Season 12 outside India, as the tournament coincides with the General Election dates in the country.

The clash of the Lok Sabha elections with the Indian Premier League (IPL) has had the speculation of the 12th edition of the tournament being hosted outside the country going on for a while. Although a partial and full shift was being discussed, with the possibilities of keeping the tournament in India also real, it now seems as if a move abroad is the most likely solution.

A recent meeting between the BCCI bosses and the sports ministry officials has stirred a speculation that the cricket board is looking to take IPL 2019 outside the country, having successfully done so on two occasions before - in 2009 (South Africa) and 2014 (partly in UAE) – because of the same reason as this year (General Elections).

“We explained to them that the key parties concerned are the ministries of home and external affairs. Apart from the other two ministries, the sports ministry’s approval is required only in case of hosting the tournament in India. Still, they (BCCI delegates) wanted to make sure about the paperwork or permissions required on the sports ministry’s part,” a source was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Rahul Johri, the BCCI CEO, had earlier suggested that the board is working towards hosting the tournament in India as the broadcaster (Star Sports) and the franchises were against hosting the tournament elsewhere because of logistical issues.

IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla had earlier spoken to Hindustan Times about the possibilities of hosting the tournament on foreign shores this season, suggesting a clash of dates with the general elections would leave the management with not many options other than taking the cash-rich league outside the country.

“If the dates of the general elections clash with those of the Indian Premier League, then the tournament will be held outside the country. But as of now, we are waiting for the dates to decide on how to go ahead with the scheduling,” Shukla had said.

The IPL 12 is expected to start on March 29, while the General Elections are also expected to be held in March – April. It's the fact that ICC World Cup will be held soon after the IPL concludes, doesn't leave BCCI with many options to tinker with the dates in order to prevent a clash with the General Elections.

IPL just before World Cup 'a concern' for Faf du Plessis

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has pointed to the Indian Premier League as "a concern" in terms of managing the workloads of his bowlers ahead of the World Cup in England starting at the end of May.

"The obvious one for me is the IPL," du Plessis said. "The IPL is just before the World Cup, and the last thing you want is one of your bowlers getting injured just before the tournament. That's something that's a concern for us, seeing how we can play that scenario out best.

"With Dale [Steyn], or KG [Rabada] or any other bowlers, in terms of workload, the World Cup is still quite a while away. Probably you'll see that closer to the World Cup we'll think about stuff like [managing workloads]."

Du Plessis' concern echoed those of Cricket Australia, who indicated in November last year that Australia's 2019 World Cup players can expect to have only limited involvement in the IPL, if they are able to play at all. CA's stipulations around player availability are believed to have contributed to Kolkata Knight Riders' decision to release Mitchell Starc.

Du Plessis is part of the Chennai Super Kings squad and will be able to keep a close eye on Imran Tahir and Lungi Ngidi, both of whom have also been retained by the franchise. Kagiso Rabada remains with Delhi Capitals. Dale Steyn was not picked up this year, but Chris Morris has also been retained by Delhi, and Anrich Nortje - the Warriors and Cape Town Blitz quick - has picked up his first IPL contract with Kolkata Knight Riders just as he started to enter the frame for national honours.

Morris provides an example of the sorts of concerns du Plessis and coach Ottis Gibson might have. He missed South Africa's engagements with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe after picking up a back injury at last year's IPL, and coach Gibson has suggested that worries over Morris' fitness have been a primary factor in his limited chances with the national side of late.

Rabada, who was South Africa's leading Test wicket-taker in 2018 and is central to their World Cup bowling plans, admitted ahead of the second Test that the last few months have been tiring for him. If he plays a leading role in South Africa's home series against Sri Lanka, which ends on March 24, Rabada won't have much time to rest before the IPL, which is likely to start in late March and runs till mid of May, around two weeks before South Africa's World Cup opener against England on May 30.

"I've been feeling a bit tired the past three months," Rabada said. "But it's been getting better. That's a positive. [I'm] gradually getting there. Hopefully, I peak at the right time [against Pakistan]."

Du Plessis added that player workload and the fitness of his fast bowlers for the World Cup is something he thinks about often, but highlighted the importance of focusing on the here and now.

"That's certainly something that's always at the back of my head. I can only speak from a personal point of view. You're continuously thinking about the decisions, and stuff that will impact that. But it's also important to stay in the present. If you look at the World Cup the whole time, you'll lose sight of what's going on in front of you. So there is that little bit of thinking ahead, but unfortunately, it's too far out to start making decisions now that will impact then."

'Jimmy Neesham deserves IPL contract', Twitter rues bad luck as Kiwi star showcases talent after auction

Despite having a base price of Rs 75 lakh, New Zealand all-rounder went unsold in 2019 IPL Auction. With his performances against Sri Lanka, the 28-year-old has shown what IPL franchises missed out on.

A base price of just Rs 75 lakhs, yet no Indian Premier League franchise went for New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham. In the ODI series against Sri Lanka, however, Neesham is showing what exactly the IPL teams have missed out on by not going for him in the auction which took place in December 2018.

Another match, another spectacular innings by Neesham, who bagged a 33-ball fifty in the second ODI against Sri Lanka to help the hosts post 319/7 in 50 overs at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. His innings ended via a run-out for 64 off 37 deliveries. Just a couple of days ago in the opening ODI of the series, he was on brink of making history by bagging the fastest ODI half-century of all time. Sadly the quota of 300 balls got exhausted and Neesham had to end his innings at 47 off 13 balls.

In the first ODI, however, Neesham did manage to break the world record of highest strike rate for a batsman in the 50-over format (361.54), going past AB de Villiers's tally of 338.6. The 47-run knock also included a 34-run over, which saw Neesham hit 5 sixes to Thisara Perera.

With the 28-year-old showcasing his explosive talent in both the ODIs against the Lankans, fans on social media rued his luck as the series wasn't scheduled before the start of IPL 2019 Auction, as if that had happened, Neesham would've gone for big bucks in the bidding war.

C Munro - 87 (Run Out)
R Taylor - 90 (Run Out)
J Neesham - 64 (Run Out)

J Neesham - He is in form of his life, one of the biggest power hitter in current era
He can bowl & can field too

Surely deserve an IPL contact 👍#NZvSL

@JimmyNeesh 'Neesham has been outstanding after his comeback', If he would've been included few days back; with definite cause he'd have been a very big buy in @IPL Auctions.
What a player he is, Just a bizzare blockbuster hitter, who fails a very little for @BLACKCAPS. #NZvSL

Neesham on song. Improved his batting miles compared to his last outing in blackcaps shirt. Bit late for IPL?

Well played neesham today against lanka.u just lost millions...i wish this odi was before IPL auction..

Neesham was a part of the Delhi Capitals squad, then Delhi Daredevils, in the 2014 IPL season. He played only 4 matches, scoring 42 runs at an average of 14. With the ball, the Kiwi got the opportunity to bowl a total of 9 overs, conceding 91 runs and bagging just one wicket.

Nevertheless, the chances of the player not playing in season 12 aren't completely over yet. In case of an injury to a player, Neesham can be called in by the franchises as a replacement. Considering the sort of performance he has put in against Sri Lanka, IPL franchises must have him on their radar for the next season.

Comeback man Steven Smith not to lead Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2019, suggests report

Steven Smith has led Rajasthan Royals in past but a ban on him saw him missing the IPL 2018. Now he is not expected to lead the team in the next season of the league.

Steven Smith may be back as a player for Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming season of IPL but he might not be leading the side. As per a report in the Mumbai Mirror, he is unlikely to be considered for the position. There are two main reasons for this. First is probably the fact that Cricket Australia had banned him from captaincy for two years, which means that he will only be possible to take the captaincy position back from 2020, a year after making his comeback.

Since BCCI did not allow him and David Warner to play IPL despite them being allowed by Cricket Australia, BCCI could follow the same rule and might ask the franchises to not name Smith and Warner captains of their respective sides.

The second reason could be the fact that Smith will not be playing full IPL. He will miss first few games if IPL starts before the last week of March and will surely leave IPL early, if named in ODI squad for World Cup. Ajinkya Rahane, who led the team in the previous season, looks all set to keep the job of the leader for the upcoming season as well.

Rahane.jpeg?5Ftk6obt8VDH8blzxhj2Snq0FbkamyDC

(Ajinkya Rahane led Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2019. Photo credits: BCCI)

Under him, the team qualified for the second round of the league, before crashing out after losing the Eliminator against Kolkata Knight Riders. For Rahane as well, the IPL will be a crucial one as he is in the scheme of things in ODIs and performance in the tournament can see him make his ODI comeback for the World Cup 2019, that takes place just after IPL.

As far Sunrisers Hyderabad are concerned, they might not even think of changing their captain. Kane Williamson, who was a surprising choice to lead the team in the previous season, led the one-time champion to the final. He is also available for full season, unlike Warner, which is enough for the franchise to continue with him as captain.
