I've been released from my KKR contract, reveals Mitchell Starc

Kolkata Knight Riders End Mitchell Starc's Contract Via Text Message

Kolkata Knight Riders End Mitchell Starc

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc revealed on Wednesday that he was released by his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2019 season of the tournament. Starc, a former member of Royal Challengers Bangalore, was snapped by the Knight Riders in the 2018 auction for a whopping INR 9.4 crore. He missed the last season with a leg injury and stands to miss out on the tournament for a fourth straight year.

Although the 28-year-old hasn't ruled out the possibility of playing for another franchise in the forthcoming edition, he is considering the benefits of a well-rested winter with the World Cup and the Ashes series to come in the UK next year.

"I got a text message two days ago from the owners of Kolkata saying I've been released from my contract, so at the moment I'll be home in April," Starc told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday (November 14). "I didn't go last year with my tibia injury. It was a great opportunity to freshen the body up and let it heal by itself. Barring the little niggle in the hammy, I feel pretty good with my body and my strength and the rest of it.

"If I don't play the IPL next year it's a good opportunity to freshen up for a massive six months of cricket in the UK. At the moment for me, I just want to play as much Test cricket and one-day cricket for Australia as I can. IPL is a lovely bonus on the pay packet but if I miss that to play more Test matches then I'm taking that option," he added.

Starc's comments come in the backdrop of reports in Australian media about national-team players seeking longer central contracts to compensate for the financial loss incurred by skipping lucrative T20 assignments. Neil Maxwell, the players' union executive member and Cricket NSW Board director, recently pushed for a five-year national contract for Pat Cummins, a negotiation that'll now be addressed to and by the new interim performance chief Belinda Clark.

Starc, to his knowledge, said that players remained on one-year contracts with the national board. "I'm sure it [longer deals] would [give greater financial security] for a lot of people. It's probably no different to working life outside of the sporting field.

"For us, we're not so worried about contracts at the moment. It's about performing on the cricket field. That will take care of the rest of it at contract time, whenever that is."

Meanwhile, former Australia fast bowler Damien Fleming said long-term contracts could be considered only if players agreed to not take part in any T20 tournaments outside of Australia. "I think it is worth talking about. If they are going to forego other domestic T20 comps. You can't have everything," he said.

"If your focus is going to be international cricket and Australian domestic cricket and maybe grade cricket, then I could live with it - probably more with fast bowlers because they are more of a premium. I certainly think it's worth a conversation."

CSK retains 22 players for IPL 2019, releases three

Reigning IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Wednesday announced it has retained 22 players for the 2019 season, releasing only three members from the title-winning squad.

Chennai: Reigning IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Wednesday announced it has retained 22 players for the 2019 season, releasing only three members from the title-winning squad.

CSK, which returned to the IPL fold after serving a two-year suspension, won the 2018 tournament, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final.
England fast bowler Mark Wood and uncapped Indian players Kanishk Seth and Kshitiz Sharma have been released.

Franchises were required to inform the IPL Governing Council by November 15 about their retentions and release of players for the 2019 player auction to be held next month.

England all-rounder David Willey, who was picked as a replacement for the injured all-rounder Kedar Jadhav has been retained.

Jadhav, who sustained an injury in the opening match and missed the rest of the tournament, also remains in the squad.

Wood featured only in one match while Sharma and Seth didn't feature in any game.

CSK had retained skipper M S Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja prior to the 2018 auction and also used the Right to Match card for Dwayne Bravo and Faf du Plessis.

The team didn't seek a replacement for New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner, who was injured and he would come back into the squad, according to CSK sources.

CSK has a purse of Rs 8.5 crore (Rs 6.5 crore left from the last season and an additional Rs two crore made available to the players this season) heading into the auction.

Ahead of IPL 2019 auction, Delhi Daredevils likely to release Gautam Gambhir: Report

Gautam Gambhir did not play for Delhi Daredevils after he stepped down as the captain of the franchise. Going into 2019 IPL auction, he might be released by the franchise.

Gautam Gambhir Delhi Daredevils

Gautam Gambhir, the two-time IPL winning captain, could be released by his franchise Delhi Daredevils ahead of the IPL auction which is slated to take place next month. As per a report in The Mumbai Mirror, Gambhir is in the possible drop list of the franchise. The left-handed batsman had made his homecoming to the Delhi-based franchise after being bought by them for an amount of Rs 2.80 Crore in the auction.

Under him, Delhi Daredevils failed to deliver at the initial stages and after losing first five of their six games, Gambhir decided to step down as the captain, handing over the reins to Shreyas Iyer. He wasn’t given a chance in the playing XI after he stepped down as the captain.

While Ricky Ponting, head coach of the franchise, stated that Gambhir had himself decided to sit out, the former DD captain had a different version and revealed that he never dropped himself from the playing XI.

“I never dropped myself from the playing XI. If that was the case, then I would’ve announced the retirement as well. A lot of cricket is still left in me,” he had told ABP news.

The comments of Gambhir were a clear indication that he was dropped from the side and going into the IPL auction, he looks all set to be released as well.

The report in The Mumbai Mirror also adds that Glenn Maxwell, Chris Morris and Jason Roy are other players who could be released. The former two were bought for an amount of Rs 9 Crore and 11 Crore respectively but they failed to deliver. Morris pulled out of the tournament mid-way and was replaced by Junior Dala.

It has already been confirmed that Chennai Super Kings have released Mark Wood, Kshitiz Sharma and Kanishk Seth whereas Kolkata Knight Riders have decided to send Mitchell Starc back in the auction pool.

IPL 2019: Ben Stokes, Manish Pandey, Jaydev Unadkat could be released by their franchises - Report

Stokes, Pandey, and Unadkat were the big-ticket buys at the auctions last year, but they could not live up to the billing and had mediocre tournaments.

IPL 2019,IPL auctions,Manish Pandey

Ahead of the IPL 2019 auctions, franchises are contemplating releasing a number of big-ticket signings in a bid to beef up their purse. The players who hogged all the headlines and attracted massive bids were KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Jaydev Unadkat, and Ben Stokes.

However, barring KL Rahul, the other players mentioned above were largely underpar and did not justice to the price tag attached with them. Hence, the franchises now want to release them.

According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, Sunrisers Hyderabad have made up their mind to let go of Manish Pandey. The right-hander had a mediocre season at best as he managed to score only 284 runs in the tournament. SRH had paid Rs 11 Crore for him and the performance did not quite add up.

As far as Rajasthan Royals are concerned, they were the big buyers at the auction last year. They acquired the services of Ben Stokes after the all-rounder was named player of the tournament in 2017, but could not live up to his billing. The all-rounder could only manage to score 196 runs and picked up just a solitary wicket before he had to leave the league owing to national commitments. The Jaipur-based franchise might just let him go as the England player might leave the tournament early to prepare for the World Cup.

Also, Rajasthan have all but decided to release Jaydev Unadkat, who was picked up for a whopping Rs 11.5 Crore in IPL 2018 auction. However, the left-arm seamer could pick only 11 wickets and even lost his spot in India’s T20I side.
