Apple care

Apple Care can be purchased from Apple (no deals) + with-in first 90 days of the device. If you haven't purchased Apple Care, you have to take the device to Apple Store before buying because they won't issue on broken devices and let you claim. To conclude you have no choice but repair from Apple Store or get it done by third party stores outside (risk) is yours.

AppleCare is the better option. It's a one time fee for two years coverage with two replacements for I think $100 now each. T-Mobile uses the standard carrier Assurion insurance, which is $12/mo, no limit on replacements I don't think, unless you replace a lot, and it's usually more expensive than Apple. With Apple, all you have to do is set an appointment, walk in to the store and exchange it. Unless you live far away from a store, then I believe they send you the new phone and you send the broken one in. Cost wise, and convenience, Apple is the better choice.

P.S. this info is from 2016. this might have changed recently, but should be pretty much similar other than amounts.
