A Short History of Indian IT

The Early Years

  • Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) founded in 1931
  • The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is setup in 1945
  • The Atomic Energy Establishment in 1949

In 1955, India imports its first computer from London. No instruction manual accompanies it, yet somehow manages to get it up and running.

During the 60s, IBM computers are installed widely in India. IBM recruits and trains Indians to help install, run and maintain their computers.

TCS is established!

The 70's

Amidst a very protective and closed economy, the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Department of Electronics (DoE) seemed to be the only real highlights.

DoE funds the computer division of a public sector company, called the Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. (ECIL), to manufacture computers. With IIT, a huge talent pool is introduced into the economy but opportunities for employment are limited for them.

This was the start of the infamous brain-drain!

Meanwhile politics of war adversely affects India's access to technology. US favors Pakistan post the 1971 war and the first nuclear test by India in 1974. Embargo on electronics and advanced computers and software cripples India's ambitions.

IBM closes operations in India in 1978 and India announces a minicomputer policy opening the field of computer manufacture to private industry, breaking public sector  monopoly.

The 80's

Numerous restrictions on imports were removed by the Government of India, enabling the inflow of new and efficient motherboards into the country. Similarly software companies were allowed to import computers at reduced import duties which helped bring down the export costs of software.

Infosys is established, Texas Instruments starts operations in Bangalore, Wipro markets minicomputers and NIIT starts computer training schools.

India's software exports stand at 100 million USD. But the Brain-drain continues!

The 90's

There is a crisis looming. Indian economy is struggling and the country faces bankruptcy.

Protectionism of the yesteryear's are bound to change and in 1991 India undergoes economic liberalization. The then P.V Narasimha Rao government acts and India opens up it's economy!

NASSCOM is formed and so are plans to have Software Technology Parks (STPs) in Indian cities.

In 1998, the Vajpayee Government takes a multitude of measures to boost the IT sector. IT is declared as India's tomorrow. 100+ companies become ISO certified. Wipro becomes the first Indian company to be CMMI Level 5 certified.

IBM wants to reenter the Indian market. HP, Oracle and GE already start operations in India. The Fiber optic bubble connects India with the world (primarily the US).

Meanwhile Y2K takes the world by storm. Organizations and governments across the world are growing worrisome.

Y2K turns out to be one of the best opportunities to come in the way of Indian IT sector. Indian IT professionals are deployed world over to help combat the Y2K menace. India in its own little way, saves the world!

The 00 and Beyond

Y2K bug is annihilated. World rejoices. India shines!

E-Commerce business booms and outsourcing becomes the new norm. India finds itself right in the middle of all the action.

HP sets up its BPO in Bangalore. Accenture starts in Mumbai. CISCO, IBM, SAP announces plans to invest in India. Google gets a taste of India!

Number of employees in the IT industry reaches 1 million and by 2010 direct employment 2.4 million in IT and 8.2 million in support services.

55% of global outsourcing market is driven from India, 6.5% of GDP is earned by IT industry and IT exports reach USD 50 billion.

The rest is history, being unraveled daily in the cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Noida, Kolkata and several others. Perhaps what we are seeing is the reverse brain drain and there might be a revolution underway.

Foundation stone laid for Cyber Towers, Hyderabad in 1991 by AP CM Nedurumalli JanardhanReddy.
At that time Indian PrimeMinister was PV Narasimha Rao.
As part of economic reforms PVNR initiated for Software Technology Parks of India also known as STPI.
Based on PVNR decision, Nedurumalli cabinet approved for Cyber Towers building and laid foundation stone.

The employment was generated in Chandrababu Naidu regime and he did publicity as I was the reason for IT to enter into Hyderabad.

Purely CBN stunt is bluff about Cyber Towers.

Real effort was done by PVNR, Nedurumalli!!

If you are saying CBN deserves credit because Cyber Towers was finished in his term , Then are you good with giving Outer ring road , airport and metro credit to YSR and KCR ?
