Confluent, the company behind open source streaming data project Apache Kafka, raises $125M

Open source software has produced a new multi-billion-dollar company – one that has some of Silicon Valley’s best-known venture firms jockeying to invest tens of millions in what they call one of the fastest-growing enterprise startups in years.

Confluent, which operates in an area of data management called event streaming, announced on Wednesday that it’s raised $125 million in Series D funding led by Sequoia Capital. The round, which included fellow previous investors Index Ventures and Benchmark, values Confluent at $2.5 billion, a source tells Forbes.

It's a fast ascent for a company that operated out of an unmarked office next to a dental practice in a nondescript stretch of Mountain View, California only four years ago, and hired its first salesperson a year later. Today, Confluent’s annual bookings have exceeded $100 million, sources close to the company say. Confluent says its bookings grew 3.5x over the past year.

Bookings aren't the same as revenue, as they include all of a contract's value up front. But Confluent’s growth has its investors raving. The startup is the fastest-growing enterprise subscription company Sequoia has ever seen, says partner Matthew Miller, who led the investment and Confluent’s previous Series C. Another high-profile investor in the company, Benchmark, agrees. Partner Bill Gurley wrote in a tweet last week that Confluent was the "fastest ramping enterprise company" that Benchmark had seen in 20 years.

The key to Confluent’s rapid ascent, according to Kreps: its underlying project’s success in expanding beyond Silicon Valley. “The technology has really come into its own,” Confluent’s CEO says. “It was used by tech giants and unheard of in the rest of the world. Now event streaming has gone totally mainstream.”

Discussed with a person while studying the science behind Kafka and I believe it evolved at linkedIn

the point is I was working on a science where there is no eventual need for database any longer

I see a blood diamond ♦️ 💎 somewhere but sure it’s coming

again this is not the place for that kind of that happens guys
