Farmington varsity exposes Telugu students penchant for US education with immigration in mind

The Farmington University episode has yet again exposed the Telugu students penchant for US education, rather the dollar dreams as majority land there with immigration in mind.

But the involvement of Telugu students in such issues has also brought focus on how the state governments are totally disconnected and don’t have a clue as to where the students are heading to and for what. None in the Telangana government or Andhra Pradesh government are able to reveal the veracity of Telugu students’ involvement as they lack data and the information.

This issue had come up in 2011 and 2013 when similar frauds were exposed by the US authorities in the Tri Valley University and the Herguan University in California and majority of the affected students then too were from the Telugu states.

Parents’ demand

There was a demand from parents and organisations working with students to set up a mechanism to collect the data of students going abroad for higher education as the accused students had to face many legal issues and the Government of India too faced problems identifying the genuine students. Students also had to face humiliating moments with some of them tagged with devices and treated like criminals.

Over the years, several such episodes erupted damaging the Telugu integrity and hard work not just in the USA but also in Australia where the visa norms were misused by the students with the encouragement of consultancies whose prime motive is to make money. In such cases, it was not just individuals who were affected but the impact worked negatively on genuine students. Moreover, the government was clueless even if it wanted to intervene at the time of crisis as it lacked the data.

NRI cell

What the government should now do is to create a mechanism to collect the data of each and every student going abroad for education making it mandatory for them to register with an agency in the government. The NRI cell can be the nodal point. Since majority students use the services of consultancies, they can as well be made to register compulsorily and pass on the data as to where the student was heading for.

Collecting the data is not a huge task as it is estimated that about 10,000 students from both the states secure visas every year and majority of them from the US Consulates. Moreover, students submit verified documents from the concerned university to the university they apply and this data can also be collected at the varsity itself.

The Telugu Associations are another big source for the government to collect the information as they actively work with the students landing there. In fact, in the Farmington University fraud issue, Telugu Associations voluntarily provided legal help. Ram Annadi, a US-based techie said this was the first time that the associations divided on regional and political lines worked together to help the Telugu students.
