IT vs other Engineering Fields

Lol. Companies know there are not many jobs in Civil. So they pay less and don't care about employee job satisfaction. When there is lot of demand for skills, companies create good work atmosphere and give good benefits. That's why companies in Bay area provide benefits like free lunches and work from home.

Many IT people get at least $10,000 Christmas bonus. My Civil engineer friend got $1000 bonus.

He works in Dallas area. He said all IT people drive BMW and he drives 2008 Toyota Corolla, lol

It depends on the area also, bay area lo 100k is the same as 70k in the Midwest.

Yes but starting salaries in Bay area are around 100k and go up to 200k within few years for IT but civil salaries are 70k may go up to 120k

Ofcourse not all professions pay the same. Ala ani andaru anukunte we won't have anyone to build buildings. Besides, if money is really all you care about, get a PE sign your own drawing, start a firm, get some connections, do an MBA. Whatever. You can't have a million dollar dream with a minimum wage work ethic.

Below are pros and cons based on my limited interaction with friends working in various fields. Please share ur opinion. I had another thread asking for best IT field to shift to instead of Civil Engg. But wanted to start a new thread on pros/cons

IT PROS:

  • Work from home on Fridays (Never for other fields)
  • Work from home mostly (Never for other fields)
  • Easy to get a job if laidoff (Other fields really difficult)
  • Opportunities in India or other countries (Other Eng fields have limited opportunities outside US)
  • Higher pay

CONS

  • Stressfull depending on the client and expectations
