On this very day 23 years back, legendary movie star and path-breaking politician who served three tumultuous terms as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao breathed his last in Hyderabad. Popularly known as NTR by Telugu-speaking people, this messiah of the masses hailed from an ordinary peasant family in a remote village in Krishna district. Upon completion of his education, NTR joined the Madras Service Commission in 1947 as a sub-registrar, a much-coveted job that he nevertheless quit within three weeks to devote himself to acting.

He was one among the very few Indian film stars who have built populist political careers out of soaring popularity gained from cinema. Best known for his portrayals of Hindu idols, especially Lord Krishna, NTR forayed into politics and established the Telugu Desam Party in 1982. After a span of nine months, the demigod was seen taking oath as the CM of unified-AP, the first non-Congress politician to do so. In 1989, he became one of the tallest figures in national politics by leading the National Front, a coalition of non-Congress parties. On his 23rd death anniversary, here are some of NTR’s remarkable achievements on the celluloid.

While many Indian actors have reprised Lord Krishna both on the big screen and television, no one came close to playing it as many times and with as much variety as Telugu actor NT Rama Rao. The mythic figure has portrayed the role in 17 films including some landmark ones like ‘Sri Krishnarjuna Yudham’ (1962), Tamil film ‘Karnan’ (1964) and ‘Daana Veera Soora Karna’ (1977). He is also popular as Lord Rama in films like ‘Lava Kusha’ (1963) and ‘Shri Ramanjaneya Yuddham’ (1974) to name a few.

In 1968, NTR was honoured with Padma Shri, the highest civilian honour bestowed by the Government of India, recognizing his contribution to Indian Cinema.

NTR’s 1977 mythological film ‘Daana Veera Soora Karna’ emerged as a blockbuster in the Telugu states and credited the versatile actor as a multitalented individual. Besides playing the three roles of Karna, Duryodhana and Krishna, NTR penned the story and screenplay. He also directed and produced the film on his home banner. NTR is the only director to infuse a duet song on Duryodhana and his little-known wife Bhanumathi. DVSK was also the first Telugu film to collect Rs 2 crore at the box-office.

The legendary personality holds the credit for introducing several powerhouses of talent like dialogue writers Paruchuri Brothers, Kaikala Satyanarayana and Nata Kireeti Rajendra Prasad to the film industry. Despite stiff competition and fan rivalries, Senior NTR held immense respect for his counterpart ANR. Setting their egos aside, the duo acted together in a total of 14 films. In fact, NTR coaxed ANR to join politics but the latter politely rejected

In a famous poll-survey conducted in celebration of 100 years of Indian cinema, NTR was adjudged as the Greatest Indian Actor with an astonishing 53 percent of the total votes. This proud moment once again reminded that the Saffron Caesar of Andhra Pradesh has occupied a permanent place in the hearts of Telugu people.

Meanwhile, a 36-ft tall bronze statue of NTR will be constructed in the Taraka Rama Sagar Project near Sattenapalli in Guntur District.
