వాషింగ్టన్: అమెరికన్ వ్యక్తులను పెళ్లి చేసుకుంటే గ్రీన్ కార్డు పొంది అమెరికాలో స్థిరపడొచ్చన్న కొంతమంది భారతీయుల వీక్ పాయింట్ రవిబాబు కొల్ల అనే వ్యక్తికి స్ట్రాంగ్ పాయింట్‌గా మారింది. ఫిబ్రవరి 2017 నుంచి ఆగస్టు 2018 వరకు అతడు అమెరికన్ వ్యక్తులతో చాలా మంది భారతీయులకు పెళ్లి జరిపించాడు. కేవలం అమెరికన్ వ్యక్తులను పెళ్లి చేసుకోవడం వల్ల ఇమ్మిగ్రేషన్ ప్రయోజనాలు పొందొచ్చని భారతీయులను రవి నమ్మించేవాడని అధికారులు తెలిపారు. దాదాపు 80 మంది ఇలాంటి స్వార్థ ప్రయోజనం కోసం పెళ్లి చేసుకున్నట్లు అధికారులు గుర్తించారు. దాని వెనుక రవి హస్తం ఉన్నట్లు పోలీసులకు సమాచారం అందింది. వెంటనే రంగంలోకి దిగిన పోలీసులు రవిని అరెస్ట్ చేశారు. రవితోపాటు ఫ్లోరిడాకు చెందిన క్రిస్టల్ క్లౌడ్, అల్తాలు కలిసి ఈ పని చేశారని పోలీసుల విచారణలో తెలిసింది. మరో 10 మంది ఉద్యోగులను నియమించుకుని మ్యారేజ్ బ్యూరో ఓపెన్ చేశారని పోలీసులు చెబుతున్నారు. అక్కడి నుంచే ఈ తతంగం మొత్తం నడిపించారని వారు తెలిపారు.

PANAMA CITY — Two Bay County residents have agreed to plead guilty to playing a role in a scheme that recruited U.S. citizens to marry Indian foreign nationals in order to skirt immigration laws, according to court records.

Krystal Cloud, 40, appeared in federal court Thursday for a hearing in the case. She was charged as an accomplice in the scheme orchestrated by 47-year-old Ravi Babu Kolla that charged Indian foreign nationals thousands of dollars in order to gain citizenship through marriage. Cloud and Kolla now have change of plea hearings scheduled in the coming year on charges of defrauding the U.S. government, court records show.

Cloud faces five years in federal prison for her role while Kolla faces a combined 20 years for two counts of defrauding the federal government and two counts of money laundering.

According to an indictment filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Kolla and Cloud abused U.S. immigration laws that allow foreign nationals to become naturalized through the marriage process. Between February 2017 and August 2018, the two recruited U.S. citizens and paid them to marry Indian foreign nationals, who in turn paid Kolla, court records show.

“Kolla paid and agreed to pay (U.S. citizens) brides and grooms $12,000 to marry Indian (foreign nationals),” officials wrote, ”$500 on the wedding day, another $500 upon submission of (federal forms), and $500 per month thereafter for approximately two years.”

Kolla employed female U.S. citizens, including Cloud, who themselves had married Indian foreign nationals. He paid the women $300 for each person they recruited. The recruiters then found other males and females to marry Indian foreign nationals to further the scheme, officials wrote.

They arranged marriages in several counties in Alabama and in Panama City, officials reported. At one point, Kolla had money coming from Indian nationals living throughout the U.S. who deposited about $255,000 into his bank account, court records show.

Kolla and Cloud were arrested and indicted by a federal grand jury this past summer.
