9 Indian-Origin People Missing After Mosque Shootings: Indian Envoy To New Zealand

 

CHRISTCHURCH: 

Nine people from India or of Indian origin have gone missing after this morning's twin shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, the Indian envoy in New Zealand has said. Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen Party or AIMIM has said two Indians have died in the attacks, a third is battling for his life.  

Forty-nine people died and around 20 people were injured when the gunmen struck during Friday prayers.  The shooting is being treated as terrorism, the motive racial, the police suspect after preliminary inquiries. One of the three persons arrested - an Australian in his late 20s - is considered the shooter.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called it one of the "darkest days" for the peaceful nation.

"As per updates received from multiple sources there are 9 missing persons of indian nationality/ origin. Official confirmation still awaited. Huge crime against humanity. Our prayers with their families," High Commissioner Sanjiv Kohli tweeted.

Two Men Of Indian Origin Shot In New Zealand, Asaduddin Owaisi Tweets Sushma Swaraj

Two men of Indian origin - Ahmed Jehangir and Farhaj Ahsan - were among those shot in New Zealand's Christchurch today, Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party, said in a tweet. Both the men have their families in Hyderabad. The worst-ever terror attack in the country left 49 people dead when unidentified gunmen opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch triggering a lockdown in the city.

Mr Owaisi has urged External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to help their families. "A video from #ChristChurch shows one Ahmed Jehangir who was shot. His brother Iqbal Jehangir is a resident of Hyderabad & would like to go to NZ for Ahmed's family (sic)," Mr Owaisi tweeted.

Ahmed Jehangir's "brother is serious" and his "family has little support", Mr Owaisi highlighted. "I'm only requesting the immediate support of your good offices in expediting his visa process. He'll make all arrangements to travel to NZ by himself," he added.
