Dhawan to stay under observation; no replacements called in

Shikhar Dhawan will stay on with the Indian World Cup team in England and his thumb injury will be assessed before a final call is taken. The 33-year-old opener was in Leeds to undergo scans on his left thumb which he injured during the Australia game on Sunday. An update is expected later today.

Contrary to multiple reports, no replacements have been called in for the left-handed opener, although as Cricbuzzunderstands,he will miss India's next game against New Zealand in Nottingham on Thursday (June 13).

The left-hander sustained the injury from a rising Pat Cummins bouncer during his century knock at The Oval in London. He was seen receiving treatment from physio Patrick Farhart on the same day, and didn't come out to field in the second innings. He was later spotted in the dressing room with an ice pack over his thumb.

Dhawan's injury might mean that India will have to push KL Rahul to the top of the order, and play a different No.4 batsman.

India team physio Patrick Farhart and Dhawan himself updated captain Virat Kohli, Head coach Ravi Shastri, batting coach Sanjay Bangar and bowling coach Bharat Arun about the situation, following which the decision to keep him with the team was taken.
