Anrich Nortje ruled out of World Cup with fractured thumb

nortje-has-been-sidelined-with.jpg

South Africa fast bowler, Anrich Nortje, has been ruled out of the ICC Cricket World Cup with a hand injury, which he suffered during a practice session in Port Elizabeth. Nortje fractured his right thumb while practising in the nets, and will need six to eight weeks to make a full recovery. In his place, Chris Morris, the all-rounder, has been called up for the World Cup.

South Africa team manager, Dr. Mohammed Moosajee, lamented the unfortunate nature of the injury. "Anrich sustained a fracture to his right thumb during a net session in Port Elizabeth on Monday. He immediately consulted a hand surgeon and underwent surgery to stabilise the joint and will unfortunately be side-lined for up to eight weeks. This makes him unavailable for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

"It is an unfortunate and freakish injury, especially because he had made a successful recovery from the shoulder injury he sustained during the series against Sri Lanka. He has had a few injury setbacks in the last year but knowing Anrich's character, he will be motivated to come back stronger. We wish him a speedy recovery," Moosajee said on Tuesday (May 7).

The 32-year-old Morris, who has been named as the replacement, last played an ODI for South Africa in February 2018 and has gone through a largely forgettable IPL with the Delhi Capitals, but South Africa will hope he can provide them with the X-factor.

Commenting on the decision, Cricket South Africa (CSA) National Selection Panel convener, Linda Zondi said: "Chris has always been in our plans and is our next best option with the ball," he explained. "He has the pace and death-bowling skills which will be vital in the UK, and also gives us that depth as a deadly finisher with the bat. We have had concerns around his injuries and workload capabilities but this is an opportunity for him to make a mark on the biggest stage. Admittedly, the injuries ahead of the tournament have been frustrating but I continue to have confidence that the players we have selected will make the country proud.

"It is unfortunate what has happened to Anrich, he is a talented player with exciting potential. We wish him well on his road to recovery and have no doubt that he will bounce back to fulfil his potential," he concluded.

The injury will come as a big blow for South Africa, who would have been hoping to use Nortje's pace and bounce to trouble teams. Their current pace stock of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Dale Steyn are also nursing or just returned to fitness from injuries. Both Rabada and Steyn played in IPL only to return home with niggles. Ngidi was ruled out of the full tournament even before it began with a side strain.

Incidentally, Nortje too missed out on the IPL for KKR with a shoulder injury. Sadly for him, the thumb injury with the World Cup just days away left the CSA with no choice than to bring in Morris as replacement.

Shoulder injury rules Jhye Richardson out of World Cup

jhye-picked-up-the-injury-in-t.jpg

Jhye Richardson has been ruled out of the 2019 World Cup because of a dislocated shoulder, Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday (May 8). Kane Richardson has been called in as replacement for the Western Australia pacer.

Jhye picked up the injury in the second ODI against Pakistan in March in Sharjahand hasn't recovered in time to make the trip to the United Kingdom. He was exceptional in the series in India where he bagged seven wickets in five games and played a key role in Australia winning the series 3-2.

"This is obviously very disappointing news for the team and for Jhye, who has been exceptional throughout his rehabilitation process," Australia's physiotherapist David Beakley said. "After his most recent assessment and attempting to bowl in the nets, it was clear that Jhye was not progressing as fast as required and therefore, in consultation with selectors, we made the decision to withdraw him from the squad.

"Jhye will continue with his rehabilitation and we will look to resume bowling in the coming weeks. At this stage, we are still hopeful that he could be available for Australia A tour of England."

The selectors have decided to go with Kane ahead of Josh Hazlewood, who is expected to play a key role of Australia in the Ashes after the World Cup and is recovering from a back stress fracture. He has been working with the Australia squad in the World Cup camp and was part of the group that toured India and then the United Arab Emirates for the series against India and Pakistan respectively.

Australia play their warm-up games against England and Sri Lanka on May 25 and 27 respectively before starting their campaign against Afghanistan on June 1.

India to keep Kedar Jadhav's World Cup spot safe

Kedar Jadhav's IPL may have come to a premature end because of a shoulder injury, but his World Cup spot is likely to remain intact. ESPNcricinfo understands that the Indian selection committee, led by MSK Prasad, has been told that Jadhav's injury might not be as serious as was earlier feared.

With the ICC's playing conditions for the World Cup allowing teams to make changes to their preliminary squads of 15 until May 23, it is believed that Prasad's panel will wait till as close as possible to the Indian team's departure before naming a replacement for Jadhav, if they are forced to.

Last Sunday, playing in Chennai Super Kings' final league match in the IPL, against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali, Jadhav hurt his left shoulder while fielding in the deep. He left the field immediately and did not return.

It was understood at the time that Jadhav's IPL was likely over, and on Tuesday evening, Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news to the host broadcaster on the sidelines of his team's Qualifier 1 face-off against Mumbai Indians, which they lost.

"Well, he is out for us, and then it is just about being accurate with that assessment," Fleming said. "He was going through the scans and working with Patrick Farhart (the Indian team physiotherapist), so there's obviously one eye now on the World Cup and getting him fit.

"But from our point of view, he is certainly out of the tournament."

The selection panel is understood to have received an update from Farhart, which indicates that Jadhav is likely to be fully fit before the Indian squad departs for the World Cup on May 22. India play their first match at the World Cup on June 5, against South Africa.

In case Jadhav can't make the trip, the selectors will pick a replacement from the standby list of five players: Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu, Axar Patel, Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma. Incidentally, Saini is also part of the quartet of fast bowlers who will travel with the squad to the World Cup to function as net bowlers, the other three being Deepak Chahar, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.
