Chasing a total as steep as 338, India made just 28 runs in the first Powerplay. Then in the final five overs of the innings MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav managed to hit just three fours and a six while picking up 20 singles and playing out six dots. It might be difficult to prove that India lost the match in these two crucial segments of play, but what can be definitively said is India lacked intent upfront and at the death.

World Cup 2019: Kedar Jadhav likely to be dropped over lack of intent vs England

World Cup 2019: India might make a few changes to their playing XI against Bangladesh after lack of intent from MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav in a steep run chase against England on Sunday.

India are considering changes for their 8th match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup against Bangladesh at Edgbaston on Tuesday. Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni were criticised for their lack of intent in a run chase of 338 and it looks likely that Jadhav will lose his place in the playing XI.

India needed 71 off 5.1 overs when Kedar Jadhav walked in to join MS Dhoni in the middle against England on Sunday. It was a steep ask but not impossible on a flat pitch and small boundaries.

 

Inexplicably, Jadhav and Dhoni played out 7 dots and ran 20 singles in the 31 balls they faced together. MS Dhoni hit the only six of the Indian innings in the final over when it was game over for India.

India have not yet booked a berth in the semi-finals but victory over Bangladesh will seal them a spot in the last four. It is understood Kedar Jadhav will be dropped.

MS Dhoni's poor strike rate in ODIs has been a cause for concern. After his go-slow approach against Afghanistan, Sachin Tendulkar said he was disappointed.

"I felt slightly disappointed, it could have been much better. I was also not happy with the partnership between Kedar and Dhoni, it was very slow. We batted 34 overs of spin bowling and scored 119 runs. This was one area where we didn't look comfortable at all. There was no positive intent," Tendulkar had said after India's narrow win over Afghanistan.

There was no positive intent from either MS Dhoni nor Kedar Jadhav against England.

As things stand now, Kedar Jadhav might be left out of the game against Bangladesh. In that case, India might go in with Ravindra Jadeja who is the best fielder in the team, bowls accurate left-arm leg-spin and is a dangerous lower-order batsman.

MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav's approach had baffled Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain who were on commentary when India failed to switch gears with the asking rate climbing up sharply.

Jadeja meeda kooda batting hopes levu kaani.. he easily saves 20+ runs in the field along with direct hits.. bowling lo kooda runs easy ga ivvadu.. would be a better contributor than Jadhav..
