It has to be H1B...non-profit h1b.

Technically you will be employed by the university and gaining a PhD is additional perk...

I don't know why you are going in circles to do a PhD. F1 meeda PhD cheste you get paid 40k and full tuition waiver no? Why do you have to go in circles to do the same?

He wants to find a job as an Instructor on an H1B visa and do a parallel research project though which he wants to get his PhD in parallel ...

Ok, it's different. But I guess he can do it. It will take longer time to get a PhD and teaching classes is a lot of work.

To become a professor is different for different fields. In my field, you do a PhD first, postdoc next, then tenure track, then associate professor and then professor. Each step is five years.

Well, he wants to join as a faculty member in a school that accepts masters degree holders. This is going to be a salaried, and probably tenure track position. Or direct tenure, as he said it is an associate professor job--usually associate professorship comes with tenure. In parallel, he can do Ph.D too.

I think he is in liberal arts, economics or math. You can't do this otherwise.

In a Actual Science or Computer field its not possible I guess.... But where ever his interest is ... Good that he gets that option...
