Pencil 1 does not work on Pro 2018.

Pencil 2 does not work on Pro 2017, etc.

For pro use, you can buy the Pencil (needs charging and Bluetooth pairing). For normal use, a $15 Wacom Bamboo stylus with nylon tip (no charging or Bluetooth business) works fine too without causing smudges like the ones with rubber tips.

If you are going to use Pro-grade drawing/sketching apps like Procreate, photo/video editing apps, music producing apps, simulation apps, etc Pro is better. Pro is more powerful than a laptop in some aspects. I use Pro 2018 11” 1 TB 6 GB RAM Cellular (max config) with Pencil 2 now for creating my music videos (lower capacity Pros have 4 GB RAM). Pro 11” has a wider screen aspect ratio 4.3:3 which I like and videos come out wider and more watchable as opposed to squarish videos from Air. Apple widened it just a bit so it doesn’t feel too wide like a laptop but just wide enough and more comfortable to use with a big bang (this may be a precursor to all future tablets going wide screens - Samsung foldable tablet is widescreen too). My last 2 song videos are made on Pro 11” in wide screen -

I actually bought both Pro 11” and 12.9” in their max configs at the same time last Dec (for $2200 and $2400), used both for over a month and returned the 12.9” as it was too big and not mobile for my kind of projects. Keep in mind a majority of apps have not updated to the new Pro rounded corner screens (and 11” wide screen) yet and there is a black border around the screens and wasted space. The apps are shrunk and still look like apps on regular Air. Apple apps, Microsoft apps, Netflix and a few others have optimized for the new screens. Currently, 11” Pro is the only iPad with wide screen. For the apps I use in my videos, I requested the devs to update their apps to optimize for Pro’s rounded corners and wide screen and they did it quickly in a few weeks (kudos to them!). If the apps you are using are outdated for the new screens, you could interact with the devs.

Here is my review and comparison of both 11” and 12.9” Pro 2018 for those in a dilemma -

https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/31428/the-ipad-pro-11-vs-12-9-2018-dilemma

Pro is for "pro" use. For normal use (browsing, news, email, Netflix, watching cat videos, photos, AFDB, etc), a regular Air is good enough (but always buy the latest for maximum longevity). I used Air 2 from 2014 (a phenomenal product that copycat competitors could not replicate so far even after 5 years) with Bamboo stylus until last year for my music projects which I still have and very much usable (now my Lulu cat 🐈 claimed it to play cat games on it and would not let me touch it :().

If going for Pro, 12.9” is too big and cannot be held in one hand and is mostly for desk use but many people prefer 12.9” for drawing/sketching with bigger screen (less scrolling and zooming. Even 11” Pro is hard to hold in one hand for long due to thin bezels and heavier weight than Air and it keeps tilting/slipping down. Newer models - no headphone jack! Missing Home button is not an issue as you can use FaceID and Assistive Touch soft button that also has Home button. I always used Assistive Touch to avoid wear-n-tear on Home button. But FaceID is much easier to use as TouchID logic seamlessly falls back on FaceID. Camera on new Pro is massive compared to Air 2 camera! Folio case is very elegant and good enough but exposes sides. You need to buy Apple Protection Plan with these new line of Pros!!

An iPad lasts 5-7 years or more if you use it carefully and limit updating iOS to no more than 3 major versions from the original version it came with. For instance, if your iPad came with iOS 12, you can update it for 3 more years until iOS 15. After that, it becomes a challenge for the old hardware to match the newer innovations in the iOS and apps pushing boundaries and the device starts lagging and degrading in performance. I upgraded my Air 2 to iOS 12 (4th major version from it’s original iOS v8) because iOS 12 is an “optimization version” for better performance and to keep the Air 2 in sync with my iPhone 6s (the last version with headphone jack) and the Air 2 still works blazing fast. I think my Air 2 would brick if I update it to iOS 13 and I don’t need to update it and can use it for another 5 years as it is built like a TANK and sturdy in Apple Leather Case. I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 7 in 2015 and iPad mini 1 to iOS 8 in 2016 (to use them as remotes to other apps on my Air 2) and they both BRICKED and slowed down! Lessons learnt - twice bitten - shy forever!!
