Hr 1044

Dear Friends,

We are proud to announce that we have procured 290 House co-sponsors for #HR1044, the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act. It is no surprise that both parties and all Americans support the basic principle of green card equality. We wish to thank Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) and Ranking Member Ken Buck (CO-04) of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship for the leadership and zealous advocacy for this bill and for making sure that, in America, the destiny of an individual is not pre-determined by the immutable circumstances of their birth.

Under new House Rules, when a bill receives 290 cosponsors, it will go to the House floor for debate and a timely vote. Accordingly, this will be the first time that the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act will receive a vote in the House since 2011, when it passed by a 389 to 15 margin.

In addition, we are thrilled to share that for the first time ever, Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act has 1/3 of the Senate as named co-sponsors. This is far more than we have ever had before, and the bill is by far the most popular bill in the Senate in terms of bipartisan co-sponsorship. For this we would like to thank the leaders of this bill Senator Mike Lee and Senator Kamala Harris of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

We’d like to give a big SHOUT-OUT to everyone in the grassroots who has worked tirelessly to create the awareness about the backlog and about the bill H.R.1044/S.386. It is important that we not let up in our advocacy. Last Congress, we had 329 House Co-sponsors, and there is no reason we should not have that again if all of us redouble our efforts to add co-sponsors before the House Floor Vote. We should all be arguing to every member of Congress where we live that they do not want to miss the train of sponsoring legislation that is finally very likely to pass this Congress. Similarly, in the Senate, there is no reason why—if we keep making our case of fairness, and explaining all of the human and economic tragedy caused by the racist backlog—that we cannot finally get to a majority of Senators as co-sponsors.

We have several strategies for getting our bill passed, which we are happy to explain to you at our upcoming DC advocacy event on June 9th, June 10th and 11th. But all of these strategies depend upon you to keep pushing, volunteering, adding more members to the group, and making yourself available when Immigration Voice needs you to contact your specific member of the House or Senate.

If you can join us in Washington DC, you will need to commit to being available in Washington DC to work with our Volunteers no later than 9AM on Sunday June 9th and leave no later than the afternoon of Tuesday June 11th. This means you will have to be in Washington DC by 9AM Sunday (June 9th) morning and we will need your help until Tuesday (June 11th) afternoon. Women and families are particularly encouraged to join us. Please register here: http://register.immigrationvoice.org with the registration code 33972819387.

If you have any questions about the advocacy event in Washington DC, please join our telegram group at Telegram.immigrationvoice.org, where volunteers are standing by to answer your questions.

If you cannot join us, you can still help by getting more co-sponsors for the bill in the House and Senate while thanking existing co-sponsors of the bill when the opportunity arises. You can find a link to the advocacy guide and how to do this here https://www.dropbox.com/s/hdkflvuxqs25cq2/H.R.1044_S.386_Advocacy_Guide_2019.pdf

For those of you who can join us and want to understand what is happening behind the scenes, we look forward to meeting you in Washington DC.

Team IV
