This beautiful pair of golden earrings is very rare.

It is the ONLY known golden ornament that has survived from ancient India.

This pair of Golden earrings belonged to a Satavahana Queen from Jaggayyapeta in Andhra Pradesh (around 100 BC)

It is decorated with a winged lion and an elephant

In ancient India, the country of Telugus was very famous for its gold. But this pair of earrings proves the superb quality of early gold-smithing in Andhra region.

It also gives us the first tangible evidence and throws light on the kind of Jewelry worn by ancient kings and queens of India.

Ironically, this pair of earrings is now at display in Met Museum, New York, thousands of miles away from its home in Andhra Pradesh. It was there in India until 20th century. It was later reported as "lost". It was "gifted" to Met Museum by John and Evelyn Kossak in 1981. Nobody knows how they got hold of it.
