afdb001 Posted June 25, 2019 Author Report Share Posted June 25, 2019 Group assaults, forces blind Muslim couple to chant “Jai Shri Ram” in violence-hit West Bengal Andal: As the state of West Bengal battles widespread communal violence, multiple stories of courage and resilience have emerged from the riot-hit region. One such story reported today was that of a blind Muslim couple who were allegedly assaulted by a mob and forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram", reported Indian daily, The Indian Express. According to reports, 67-year-old Abul Bashar and his wife Bedana Bibi aged 61, were thrashed by a group of miscreants at Chitadanga area of Andal in West Bengal's Burdwan district. The incident entered into the national limelight after a video of the group forcing the couple to chant "Jai Shri Ram" and "Jai Maa Tara" went viral on social media. While no immediate reports claim the involvement of any radical Hindu outfit in the incident, the victims confirmed that the assault took place on Tuesday, a day before communal clashes broke out in Asansol and Raniganj among other pockets of the state. The blind couple, who beg for a living, claim that they knew nothing of the impending riots and went out to beg like they do on any other day. Abul, the husband, said, "We go to various places in Birbhum and Burdwan. In Andal, some people came and snatched my cap. They said they will kill us because we are Muslims and had entered a Hindu-dominated area. Then they started beating me and my wife. My wife begged for my life and pleaded that we will never come to this area if they let us go. But they did not listen." Bashar added to his claim by saying that he pleaded to the group to allow them to beg without causing them any trouble, however, the group continued to harass them and forced them to chant "Jai Shri Ram" before physically assaulting them in broad daylight. "I told them that Bhagwan and Allah are the same and people have the right to freedom of religion. I asked them why they were forcing us to chant Jai Shri Ram. As we feared for our lives, I agreed to do what they wanted," said Bashar. A video of the incident that went viral soon after shows the 67-year-old blind beggar holding a saffron-flag with "Om" written on it as he is forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram" by the group. Meanwhile, the couple refuse to register a complaint citing the safety of their family and said that they were too scared to go the police with their grievances. The same was confirmed by officer-in-charge of Andal police station, Sanjay Chakraborty who was quoted as saying, "We have not received any complaint (in this regard)."
