Amid intense speculation over his future, MS Dhoni is not travelling with the India squad to the West Indies. Chief selector MSK Prasad said the wicketkeeper-batsman is "unavailable" for the tour.

Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have been rested from the white-ball leg of the tour, and the latter isn't part of the Test squad either.

The Test squad is largely along expected lines, with Wriddhiman Saha making his return after a year out injured as one of two wicketkeepers alongside Rishabh Pant. R Ashwin, who hasn't played international cricket since the Adelaide Test in December 2018, and missed the rest of the Australia Tests with a side strain, is part of a three-member spin contingent alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

The white-ball squads include a pair of uncapped players. Fast bowler Navdeep Saini has found a place in both the ODI and T20I squads, and legspinner Rahul Chahar has earned a call-up to the T20I squad. Middle-order batsmen Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey, and left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed, have also been recalled to the ODI squad, with Dinesh Karthik, who was India's reserve keeper at the World Cup, missing out.

Shikhar Dhawan, who left the World Cup midway with a broken thumb, has recovered fully and is back in the ODI and T20I squads. Vijay Shankar, who suffered a toe fracture during the tournament, is still not back to full fitness, however.

Since the World Cup, intense debate has swirled around Dhoni's place in the side, with plenty of speculation over whether he should retire. Prasad refused to get drawn into this, and didn't specify any reason for his unavailability.

"Retirement is purely individual. A legendary cricketer like MS Dhoni, he knows when to retire," he said. "I don't think we need to discuss anything on it, because first of all he's not available. Second, we have already started grooming some youngsters."

Test squad: Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant (wk), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav

ODI squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kedar Jadhav, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Navdeep Saini

T20I squad Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (wk), Krunal Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Rahul Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini

India will be without Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the upcoming full tour (three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests) of the West Indies, starting from August 3. The veteran keeper, according to chief selector MSK Prasad, had conveyed his unavailability to the board.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who had groin injury during the World Cup, has been rested, while Vijay Shankar too is missing from the limited-overs squad as he hasn't fully recovered from the toe injury sustained during the marquee event.

ODI Squad:Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kedar Jadhav, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Navdeep Saini
T20I Squad: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (WK), Krunal Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Rahul Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini
Test squad:Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant (WK) Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav

For the limited-overs leg of the tour, India have gone with a single wicketkeeping option in Rishabh Pant, while in the longer format Wriddihman Saha has been brought back following his full recovery since suffering an injury during the tour of South Africa in 2018.

"We have taken India A performances into consideration. In the longer format, KS Bharat was very, very close to get selected. We have an unwritten norm when a senior cricketer is injured, he should get a comeback opportunity. That's what we have given to Saha," MSK Prasad said.

The BCCI has also decided to rest their premier all-format fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the T20Is and the ODIs, before he returns for the Tests, while Test opener Murali Vijay, who had ordinary returns in Australia earlier this year, has been dropped. Also missing from the Test squad is Prithvi Shaw, who hasn't recovered from the hip injury he suffered last May during the T20 Mumbai League.

Besides the return of Shikhar Dhawan, India's ODI squad will also have the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey, who previously auditioned for the No. 4 spot. Left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed and highly-rated uncapped quick Navdeep Saini have also been picked. Mayank Agarwal, who was roped in as Vijay Shankar's replacement at the World Cup but didn't get any game time, has not been picked.

In the T20I squad, there have been more ins and outs from the last time India played in the format. Dinesh Karthik, Siddarth Kaul, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav and Bumrah are all missing, with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Rahul Chahar, Bhuveshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini being included.

India kick-off their long tour with three-match T20I series, with the first two being played in Florida on August 3 and 4, before shifting base to Guyana for the last game on August 6. The three ODIs will then follow from August 8, before the two-Test series begins from August 22.

Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw's wait to return to the Indian Test squad will continue as he remains sidelined with injury and will not be back for the West Indies tour. Shaw, who suffered a hip injury at the Mumbai Premier League T20 tournament in May, is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

"Shaw was not considered for selection because he has not recovered from a hip injury. It's unclear when he'll be available," chairman of selectors MSK Prasad told the media in Mumbai on Sunday (July 21).

Shaw made a sensational century on debut against West Indies in India last year and was picked for the Australian tour as well. But he injured his leg while attempting a catch on the boundary in a practice game down under.

“I am not fully fit at the moment. I am doing my rehabilitation for a hip injury that I sustained at the Mumbai T20 league. Even I don’t know when I will be fit,” Shaw, who has played in only two Tests so far, said last week.

Shaw played the entire IPL-12 for the Delhi Capitals, scoring 353 runs with two half-centuries and a top score of 99 this season.

“Right now I am trying to get back to full fitness as soon as possible. Once I am fit, I’ll speak to the selectors and team management to figure out how we can plan for the rest of the season and how to go about my training,” the 19-year-old added.

In Shaw's absence, the two specialist openers chosen for the two Tests in the Caribbean is Karnataka duo KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal.
