South Rim should be ok in October.. might get chilly late in the  evening..Hoover Dam is on the way.. you can drive by or do a tour.. if you spend some  time at the Dam & Lake Meade area .. plan on staying the night closer to the Grand Canyon.. FlagStaff etc.. there are different viewing sports inside the park.. you can take the shuttle & get on and off as you like.. I really liked the place.. been there twice.. for me it was better than the Niagara Falls.. Death Valley will take the whole day.. Again it depends.. if you are a nature lover you will love it.. else it might get boring.. except for the bad water basin ( lowest point in the US ).. and a couple of Ghost Towns.. have fun..
