Despite entreaties on behalf of the rapper, Swedish authorities charged the rapper with aggravated assault following a June 30 incident in Stockholm. Trump reacted to the news by saying Sweden should "treat Americans fairly" and used the hashtag #FreeRocky.

President Donald Trump on Thursday ramped up his lobbying efforts to secure the release of American rapper A$AP Rocky from Swedish custody, saying he was “very disappointed” in Prime Minister Stefan Löfven for failing to intervene as the rapper was charged with assault.“Very disappointed in Prime Minister Stefan Löfven for being unable to act. Sweden has let our African American Community down in the United States. I watched the tapes of A$AP Rocky, and he was being followed and harassed by troublemakers,” the president wrote on Twitter, imploring Löfven to “treat Americans fairly!” . In a second tweet, Trump was more blunt: “Give A$AP Rocky his FREEDOM. We do so much for Sweden but it doesn’t seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem!”. Trump included the hashtag #FreeRocky at the end of both tweets.
