India makes the Islamic practice of instant divorce a crime

Triple Talaq involves a Muslim man saying 'talaq' (divorce) three times in order to divorce his wife. The new bill will make that a crime, punishable by up to three years in jail, if it is said in any form including via social media and text messages. Once approved by Narendra Modi the bill becomes law.

What is Triple Talaq?

 

The practice allows a husband to divorce his wife by simply saying the word for divorce, talaq, three times. There have been cases in which Muslim men in India have divorced their wives by issuing the so-called triple talaq by letter, telephone and, increasingly, by social media.
