What is use of bharatnatyam or music or any other skill? Learning a skill that can unlock a treasure trove of ancient knowledge/poetry and other things is not useful?

Agree and I was about to say this. There was a discussion between me and coworkers a few years ago who tried saying Sanskrit is this, that, etc and should be taught to kids along with slokas (these were IT guys who would not make any effort in learning Sanskrit for themselves) and my point was Sanskrit is an utter waste of time with NO “commercial” value whatsoever. People don’t get jobs because they know Hindi or Sanskrit but because they know good English and other foreign languages. Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, etc have value and give you an edge over others as BI-LINGUAL when you are in the job market. Learning Sanskrit is a waste of time and energy that could be used to learn something more valuable instead. Even people in India do not use it in daily life. When I mentioned the advantage of being “bilingual”, they stopped their argument immediately.

Countries like China, Japan, Korea, etc preserved their culture and languages (for the foreseeable future) but that resulted in very severe language barriers for them while dealing and communicating or doing business with the rest of the world. And because they preserved their cultures, they are valuable for others to learn them to do business with them. But India embraced modern civilization and western culture and had to shed some of its own culture in the process. And because we lost our culture, it is not valuable for anyone to learn our ancient stuff - they are of NO use. Had we preserved our culture like those countries, it would have made sense to learn Sanskrit so we could communicate and transact business in Sanskrit and also become valuable to other countries. There are always trade-offs.

I cringe when our latest technology movies are filled with heavy dialogues and songs of slokas. Why make iSmart Shankar only to fill it with heavy music? Nobody uses such heavy language in daily life. Why can’t they be simple and think futuristic for all the $hit load of money they spend?

Sanskrit suited olden times. Old movies suited old times. Old music suited old times. Times have changed - we should think modern. IT people should think futuristic!

Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam, Yoga, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Music are different - they are good for mind, body and health to keep them in balance. When you learn classical music, you end up learning some kirtanas and that’s okay.

But Sanskrit... meh - don’t waste your time on it or even think about it. You will regret it if you do. The last thing you wanna do is kick yourself for having wasted your life on learning something so useless. If you still wanna learn it, go do it (and have fun) - but just do NOT make your kids learn it. They deserve better, simpler, lighter, easier, younger, modern and futuristic things to sync with the current times.
