@CricPokChic   you missed out Kallis & Katich moved away from KKR coaching staff... Now Brendon McCullum comes in his place.

Brendon McCullum named KKR head coach

Brendon McCullum is set to take over as head coach at Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming season, to go with his appointment as the head coach of Trinbago Knight Riders, the other team owned by the same group, as well.

"It's a great honour to take on this responsibility," McCullum said. "The Knight Rider franchises in IPL and CPL have become iconic and have set the standard in franchise cricket. We have fantastic squads in both KKR and TKR and I, along with the support staff will be looking to build on the success both franchises have enjoyed."

Less than a week ago, it had been learnt that McCullum would take over as head coach at Trinbago but only as assistant coach with the IPL franchise, following his retirement from all forms of the game earlier in the month. That's changed since, with the top job at the Kolkata franchise going to the former New Zealand captain, too.

KKR's chief executive Venky Mysore described him as an ideal candidate to take over from Jacques Kallis, the Kolkata coach till last season. "Brendon has been an integral part of the Knight Riders family for a long time," Mysore said. "His leadership qualities, honesty, positive and aggressive style, combined with his natural ability to bring the best out of the teams he has been a part of makes him ideally suited to lead both KKR and TKR as a head coach."

McCullum, 37, was expected to play in the Euro T20 Slam from August 30 as an icon player for Glasgow Giants but instead announced his retirement as a freelance cricketer. It's understood that the decision to skip the new tournament was because Trinbago wanted him to helm the team at the CPL this year itself, and the dates of the two competitions clashed; the CPL starts from September 5. In any case, the Euro T20 Slam has since been cancelled because of financial difficulties.

Indeed, in his message on Instagram at the time of announcing his retirement, McCullum had mentioned that "the next chapter, in both media and coaching, will challenge me further".

Kolkata recently announced that they were parting ways with Kallis, their head coach, and Simon Katich, the assistant coach who was also the head coach at Trinbago.

McCullum had retired from international cricket in 2016, after the Christchurch Test against Australia, but continued to turn out in franchise-cricket leagues around the world, with stints in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, as well as Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash, Lahore Qalandars in the PSL and Trinbago in the CPL.

His association with the Knight Riders goes way back, as Mysore noted. An early pathbreaker of sorts in T20 cricket, McCullum's best in the format was the unbeaten 158 he made for the Kolkata team against Royal Challengers in the inaugural IPL game, in 2008.

In December 2018, McCullum went unsold at the IPL auction. In February, he called time on his BBL career with Heat after a relatively strong season in which he made 302 runs in 13 innings. At the time, he had expressed his desire to continue playing T20 cricket worldwide.

Only two weeks ago in London, McCullum was signed by Glasgow for the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam, where he was to team up with Dale Steyn, among others. However, the desire to "plough on regardless" didn't appeal to him anymore.

"I owe it to myself and the teams I represent to close that chapter rather than just plough on regardless of what I know to be true," he wrote. "In T20 cricket, I've enjoyed so many varied challenges, I can leave the game knowing I left no stone unturned."

Brad Haddin to join SRH as assistant coach

Former Australia keeper-batsman Brad Haddin will join IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad as an assistant coach for the next season of the T20 tournament, the franchise announced on Monday (August 19). Haddin joins a new coaching setup for the 2016 champions that will be helmed by head coach Trevor Bayliss, who recently replaced Tom Moody.

Haddin will replace incumbent assistant coach Simon Helmot, the former Melbourne Renegades coach who served in the position since the start of 2018. SRH will hope to maximise the Bayliss-Haddin combination to further their on-field success, which has seen them qualify to the playoffs in each of the last four seasons. Bayliss was coach and Haddin the captain when Sydney Sixers won the Champions League in 2012.

Like Bayliss, Haddin too has IPL experience with the Kolkata Knight Riders although their paths didn't cross at the Kolkata franchise. Haddin played in the 2011 season while Bayliss coached the side between 2012 and 2015 before taking up the England job. Haddin served a two-year term as a fielding and wicketkeeping coach for Australia since he was appointed in August 2017. He was also in charge of the Australia A team post his international retirement in 2015.

RCB support staff overhaul: Kirsten and Nehra out, Hesson and Katich in

1198437_1296x729.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=c

Royal Challengers Bangalore have announced a major overhaul to their support staff, sacking Gary Kirsten and Ashish Nehra as the batting and bowling coach respectively, and bringing in Mike Hesson as director of cricket and Simon Katich as head coach.

Nehra, the former India pacer, and Kirsten, the former South Africa batsman with vast coaching experience including with India during their 2011 World Cup win, had been appointed in 2018 after former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was removed as head coach following the 2018 season. Both Nehra and Kirsten were part of the leadership group along with Royal Challengers' captain Virat Kohli since then. However, the team that had made the final in 2016, finished sixth in 2018 and were the wooden spooners in IPL 2019, leading to a rethink in the management.

According to Sanjeev Churiwala, the Royal Challengers chairman, the move to switch to a single-coach model became necessary because the franchise wanted to achieve "high performance".

"RCB's purpose is to be the most trusted, respected and best performing T20 franchise and hence our constant endeavour is to create a culture of excellence and high performance for every member of the team," he said in a media statement.

Churiwala said both Hesson and Katich had the necessary experience to create a "winning culture" at Royal Challengers, who have never won the IPL despite reaching the final thrice. "We believe that Mike's extensive experience in building strong teams along with Simon's powerful cricket experience will help us create a winning culture. As a result of this restructuring exercise, we will be moving to a single coach model."

Delhi Capitals set to buy out R Ashwin from Kings XI Punjab

1183294_1296x729.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=c

India offspinner R Ashwin is likely to join Delhi Capitals for the 2020 IPL. ESPNcricinfo understands that Ashwin is on the verge of moving out of Kings XI Punjab, who signed him at the 2018 auction for INR 7.6 crore (then USD 1.176 million approx) and appointed him captain. Although the current move would ordinarily be termed a trade, technically, Capitals are buying out the player in an all-cash deal.

It is understood that, Capitals apart, Sunrisers Hyderabad had expressed interest in Ashwin at one point, but talks did not progress too far.

Capitals are understood to have made the first move, and the two franchises have been engaged in talks for the past few months. If the deal goes through, Ashwin's procurement would further swell Capitals' rich collection of spinners. Capitals' other Indian and overseas spinners include Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Rahul Tewatia, Jalaj Saxena, Mayank Markande, J Suchith and Sandeep Lamichhane.

Capitals will become the fourth IPL franchise for Ashwin, who has previously represented Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI.

Over the years, Ashwin has not been afraid to experiment both with his bowling action and his stock balls, and has utilised his variety to create doubt and dominate batsmen. With his experience and skillset, Ashwin has proved to be an asset as he can bowl in the Powerplay, dry up runs in the middle overs, and restrict batsmen at the death. Overall, he has taken 125 wickets in 139 IPL matches at an economy rate of 6.79, which is the best among all Indian bowlers with 50-plus wickets.

With Ashwin as captain, Kings XI won 12 games and lost 16 in the past two IPL seasons. Although they were a contender for the playoffs at the halfway stage in both seasons, they eventually failed to advance.

It is understood that Kings XI, who recently sacked their entire coaching staff led by New Zealander Mike Hesson, are likely to appoint a new captain with India batsman KL Rahul currently the favourite. One of the Kings XI owners said that the management was keen to have a new captain who would lead the franchise in the future.

IPL 2020 auction on December 19 in Kolkata

1134630_1296x729.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=c

The IPL auction for the 2020 season will be held on December 19 this year and, for a change, the BCCI has decided to conduct it at a new venue: Kolkata. The auctions have traditionally been held in Bengaluru.

This year's auction is the last small one before franchises disband next year and prepare to assemble fresh squads from 2021 at a mega auction. The last big IPL auction took place in January 2018, when franchises were allowed to retain five players before building new squads.

ESPNcricinfo understands that all eight franchises were informed on Monday that the trading window would close on November 14. The franchises were originally allotted INR 85 crore (US $12 million approx) to build their teams for 2020. Every franchise will also have an additional purse of INR 3 crore (US $425,000 approx) in addition to the balance in their kitties from the last auction.

Delhi Capitals have the biggest balance - INR 8.2 crore, followed by Rajasthan Royals - INR 7.15 crore, Kolkata Knight Riders (INR 6.05 crore), Sunrisers Hyderabad (INR 5.3 crore), Kings XI Punjab (INR 3.7 crore), Chennai Super Kings (INR 3.2 crore), defending champions Mumbai Indians (INR 3.05 crore) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (INR 1.8 crore).

Anil Kumble appointed Kings XI Punjab head coach

Anil Kumble has been appointed as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab in the IPL from the upcoming season, while also being put in charge of "all cricket-related affairs" of the team for the foreseeable future, co-owner of the franchise Mohit Burman has confirmed. The appointment makes Kumble the only Indian coach in the IPL.

Burman also informed ESPNcricinfo that Kumble would make a presentation to the team management on his plans for the road ahead on October 19. On the same day, an update on R Ashwin's future with the team is also expected.

As ESPNcricinfo had reported on September 3, there were talks between the franchise and Delhi Capitals for Ashwin, Kings XI's captain for the last two IPL seasons, to be traded out. Burman said that the final call on that would be taken by Kumble, who recently lavished praise on the offspinner in an interview with Cricketnext.com, saying, "he is still the best spinner that you have."

Kings XI were coached by Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand men's coach, last season, and Kumble's appointment makes it five coaches in five seasons for the team. Sanjay Bangar was in charge between 2014 and 2016 before Virender Sehwag, who was already their mentor, became head of cricket operations in 2017, followed by Brad Hodge and Hesson taking over as head coach in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

The results, however, didn't change dramatically even as the support staff did, with the team finishing bottom of the eight-team table in 2015 and 2016, before improving somewhat to end at fifth, seventh and sixth in the last three seasons. In 2014, they were the table-toppers but lost the final to Kolkata Knight Riders, which was their only appearance in the final four after the inaugural season in 2008, when they made the semi-finals.

As for Kumble, who served as head coach of the India men's team between 2016 and 2017, Kings XI will be the third IPL team he will be involved with. He started out as a player - and later captain - with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008. He was then appointed as a mentor by the same team, before joining Mumbai Indians in a similar role in 2013. He left the position in 2015 and subsequently took up the job with the India team, which he stepped down from after the 2017 Champions Trophy, calling his relationship with captain Virat Kohli "untenable".

Kumble was also one of the members on the inaugural Euro T20 Slam's advisory committee, but the league was cancelled two weeks before its scheduled start in August because of financial issues.
