That was strategic failure by selection committee. 

But Rayudu didn't help his cause by not performing well. In 2019, his batting average was 30 odd. Meanwhile, 3d won us a couple of games before world cup. Selectors gambled. Failed. 

Before  world cup, our middle order was weak with Dhoni, Kedar and Rayudu. Any one of them could have been left out.
