Anil Kumble Named KXIP Head Coach, Courtney Walsh Comes on Board as Scout

Former India coach and country’s highest wicket-taker in Tests, Anil Kumble has been appointed as director, cricket operations, Kings XI Punjab.

Former India skipper Anil Kumble has been appointed as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

KXIP have also brought West Indies great Courtney Walsh on board as talent scount, pretty much like the long-time association former India coach John Wright has with Mumbai Indians.

Former India spinner Sunil Joshi and Kumble's longtime national and state teammate will be the assistant coach of the Punjab franchise. South African great Jonty Rhodes is set to be the team's fielding coach and former Australian captain George Bailey will coach the batsmen.

Spin legend Kumble has been put in charge of "all cricket-related affairs" of the team and will be making a presentation to the team management regarding his plans on October 19.

It has also been learnt that Kumble will also take a call on Ravichandran Ashwin's future with the team on the same day. Ashwin, who captained the side in the past two seasons, is expected to be traded to Delhi Capitals ahead of the next season.

"Kumble will decide who all players will stay and who all will be released. Walsh will be scouting talent for the team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy before the IPL and will also work with our pacers," a KXIP source told PTI.

Kumble, who had a brief stint with the Indian men's team as head coach between 2016 and 2017, is currently the only Indian coach in the IPL.

For the 48-year-old, KXIP will be the third IPL team that he will be involved with, having featured as a player and later captain with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008.

He had also joined Mumbai Indians in 2013 as a mentor before quitting in 2015. He then joined the Indian team as the chief coach but it ended acrimoniously in 2017 after his relationship with skipper Virat Kohli became "untenable".

Kumble is the fifth coach to join the Punjab franchise in the last five editions. He will also have a high-profile support staff to work with. Walsh and Joshi were involved with the Bangladesh team till the World Cup while Bailey has captained KXIP.

Earlier, Sanjay Bangar (2014-2016), Virender Sehwag (2017), Brad Hodge (2018) and Mike Hesson (2019) had served as head coach of the team, which finished at the bottom in 2015 and 2016 before signing off in fifth, seventh and sixth place in the last three seasons.

KXIP had reached the semifinals in 2008 and finished second-best after losing in the final to Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 edition. With Kumble in their dugout, they will be hoping to win their maiden title in 2020.

R Ashwin to stay at KXIP, not to be traded with Delhi Capitals

Ravichandran Ashwin, who was signed by Kings XI Punjab at the 2018 auction for Rs 7.6 crore, led the franchise in 14 matches in this year's IPL edition and has been retained by the board.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • KXIP decide not to trade Ravichandran Ashwin with the Delhi Capitals
  • Anil Kumble was keen to retain Ashwin, who captained the side in the previous two editions
  • KXIP reached the semifinals in the inaugural IPL edition in 2008 before making the playoffs just once in 2014

Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia on Monday said the franchise decided not to trade Ravichandran Ashwin with the Delhi Capitals following a "rethink" by the Board.

It has been learned that the newly-appointed head coach Anil Kumble was also keen to retain Ashwin, who captained the side in the previous two editions.

"The (KXIP) Board had a rethink and it realised that Ashwin is an integral part of the team. There were discussions with Delhi Capitals but those discussions never came to fruition. The way he plays his cricket and his performances speak for him," Wadia told PTI.

Under Ashwin's leadership, KXIP showed a lot of promise in the first half of the past two seasons before losing momentum in the second half. They finished seventh in 2018 and sixth in 2019.

The off-spinner, who only plays one format for India, has been in fine form in the ongoing Test series against South Africa.

KXIP reached the semifinals in the inaugural IPL edition in 2008 before making the playoffs just once in 2014 when they finished runners-up. Now with the legendary Kumble on board, the franchise is aiming to end its title drought. The former India captain has been handed a three-year contract.

"Anil is really a breath of fresh air. He is so cool, calm and collected. We are fortunate to have a relationship with him. Likewise he sees it as an opportunity to take KXIP into something which it has the potential to be.

"Last two seasons, we were the best team in the first half but somehow lost focus and momentum in the second. I really don't know what happened," said Wadia.

Kumble stepped down as India head coach following the 2017 Champions Trophy final due to serious differences with skipper Virat Kohli. He also held mentorship roles at Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"He will bring a lot of calmness to the team and discipline most definitely. He will inspire players to really optimise their own talent without trying too hard. His rich coaching experience will help us tremendously. We have a three-year contract and we hope to work together beyond that," said the co-owner.

KXIP have done a lot of chopping and changing with their support staff in the last five years when the likes of Sanjay Bangar, Virender Sehwag, Brad Hodge and Mike Hesson donned the head coach role.

"I have lost count of the coaches we have had. We are looking for stability and stability is good as long as there is performance," added Wadia.

The appointment of Navnita Gautam as their massage therapist will make the Royal Challengers Bangalore the first team in the history of the Indian Premier League to appoint a woman as a part of their support staff. She will work alongside Evan Speechly, the head physiotherapist, and Shanker Basu, the strength & conditioning coach.

Her role would entail "performing specialized techniques pertaining to the preparation, motivation, overall supervision and all individual physical ailments relating to the team," a release from the franchise stated on Thursday (October 17).

"I am very pleased to be a part of this moment in history and another step in the right direction," said RCB chairman, Sanjeev Churiwala. "The game has come a long way, in many ways, in terms of the Women's Cricket Team and how many people are watching it, the interest was long due.

"Sport is a great enabler, but it is important to ensure that the principles of equity in participation also extends to its staffing bodies. Increasing participation and success by women in all sporting arenas have made this possible and we at RCB are very thrilled to have found great talent in Navnita."

Andrew McDonald roped in as Rajasthan Royals head coach

mcdonald-presided-over-a-title.jpg

Former Australian cricketer Andrew McDonald has been brought in as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals on a three-year contract. McDonald, who has previously played in IPL for Delhi Daredevils (2009 and 2011) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2012 and 2013), also comes with coaching experience in the league - having been the bowling coach of Virat Kohli's side. McDonald comes in to replace Paddy Upton, who was only appointed before the start of the previous season.

"I'm delighted to join the Royals family. It's a great honour to take on this responsibility. The Rajasthan Royals is a new, exciting challenge for me, and I can't wait to get started working with our world class players and coaches in one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world," McDonald said following his appointment.

McDonald brings in some coaching credentials outside of the IPL too. The 38-year-old helped Victoria win the Sheffield Shield in his first year as coach. He has also powered Melbourne Renegades, who finished seventh in the 2017-18 season, to a Big Bash title this year.

"We are delighted to appoint Andrew as our Head Coach. He shares our belief of discovering potential and championing dreams and is aligned with our vision to continue to drive innovation in the IPL. Andrew will be preparing for the season by sharing experiences and best practices with exceptional coaches in other sports and will be visiting India in the near future to meet the Royals team, both on and off the field," Ranjit Barthakur, the executive chairman of the Rajasthan Royals said.

"Andrew's innovative, forward thinking nature, along with his experience in the IPL and success in other leagues is why we have selected him as Head Coach to help us drive long term success. He is data focused and an impressive man manager who remains well versed with the rigours of modern day cricket," head of cricket Zubin Bharucha, who was part of the panel that picked a coach, said.

Rajasthan Royals' claim to fame is that they're the inaugural champions of the IPL, but have struggled to be up amidst the best sides in the league's 11 seasons since.
