Woakes pulls out of IPL to keep fresh for England summer

Chris Woakes, who was picked by Delhi Capitals for INR 1.5 crores at the 2020 IPL Auction, has pulled out of the tournament in order to stay fresh for England's home summer.

The IPL, which runs from March 29 to May 24, is bookended either side by Test assignments for the England squad, of which Woakes is an integral member. England are currently preparing for two Tests against Sri Lanka, and will later play six Test across three months at home against West Indies and Pakistan starting from June 4, making for a gruelling schedule.

Instead, Woakes has decided to remain fresh for his international assignments and has informed the franchise of his decision according to the PA news agency.

While Woakes doesn't have a great record in the IPL (E/R - 9.24, 25 wickets in 18 games), this is still a setback for Delhi Capitals' seam bowling department, considering there's a big question mark over Ishant Sharma, who suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury in New Zealand. Even Kagiso Rabada is facing a race against time to recover from his groin strain.

IPL 'on' with 'all precautions' against coronavirus - Ganguly

Even as COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) continues to cripple all walks of life across the world, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said the IPL is "on" and that the board is taking all necessary precautions for the smooth conduct of cricket's most lucrative tournament, which begins on March 29. Some of those precautionary measures are likely to involve asking players to avoid physical contact as far as possible including shaking hands with fans, considering the coronavirus is highly contagious.

"It's on…and BCCI will take all protection (against coronavirus)," Ganguly told ESPNcricinfo when asked how the board was dealing with the outbreak that is threatening to bring daily life to a standstill. Spectator sport is seen as particularly vulnerable, given it brings a large crowd together in a confined space. The IPL has an added complication: its global profile, with players, support staff and vast administrative and broadcast services being drawn from across the world.

The novel coronavirus is a respiratory illness, which originated in China, and, has no cure yet, forcing the shutting down of towns, cities, schools across the world. Global medical experts have been anxious about how India, the world's second-most populous nation, would respond to the outbreak. The official figures released by the Indian Ministry of Health so far has put the count of those infected closer to 30.

The outbreak has already begun affecting sporting events. In Italy, one of the worst affected countries, the government ordered all Serie A matches to be played behind closed doors with no fans allowed at any football ground until April 3. The March 14 Six Nations rugby game between Italy and England, scheduled in Rome, has been postponed. It was the second game involving Italy to be postponed after the contest against Ireland in Dublin scheduled for Saturday. The Premier League in England is also talking to the clubs to have matches played behind closed doors as the UK government's chief medical officer today said the country was moving from containment to delaying the spread of the coronavirus, which claimed its first victim on Thursday.

Although there has been no official update put out by the BCCI or the IPL on the respective websites (a norm followed by global sporting organisations), ESPNcricinfo understands that the top officials have been internally discussing the outbreak and its potential impact on the T20 tournament. It is believed that the BCCI has been following the guidelines and updates put out by the Health Ministry on coronavirus.

A senior BCCI official confirmed that the board would replicate the precautionary guidelines recommended by the Health Ministry and send them to all the stakeholders: players, franchises, airlines, team hotels, broadcast crews and everyone else involved in the running of the tournament.

As far as the players go, the BCCI would ask them to be proactive and report to the concerned medical authority in case they detect any of the symptoms associated with the coronavirus, which include cough, fever or difficulty in breathing. Also if the person has travelled in or via high-risk areas across the world, he/she would need to report that.

It is understood that the BCCI would also advise the players not to shake hands with fans or even possibly take pictures with devices that are not their own. All these measures are already being followed globally by athletes. Recently England captain Joe Root said that England players would not be shaking hands with one another on their tour of Sri Lanka to ensure germs and bacteria are not spread. The England players would instead resort to fist bumps, something even the National Basketball League (NBA) in the USA advised its players to use instead of the high-fives. The NBA also asked the players not to use the pens/markers fans provide them to sign autographs.

The BCCI has not yet discussed whether it would recommend fist bumps over handshakes, but the official said that as things evolve, the board would be open to take all measures that would keep everyone safe.

Many top sporting events including the Tokyo Olympics have come under threat with countries warning against mass congregations in light of how contagious the virus is.

Cricket, too, has been affected with a women's quadrangular in Thailand being the first tournament to be postponed last week. On Thursday, the Everest Premier League, a domestic T20 tournament scheduled to start from March 14 in Nepal, was postponed indefinitely even though the country has reported just one case of the outbreak yet. The ICC World Cup Challenge League due to be hosted by Malaysia on March 16 has also been postponed

Andy Flower appointed assistant coach in Kings XI Punjab overhaul

1107523_900x506.jpg&w=900&h=506&scale=cr

Kings XI Punjab have overhauled their support staff for IPL 2020, with the most high-profile appointment being that of Andy Flower as assistant coach. The former Zimbabwe captain brings a wealth of coaching experience, having helped England to their first-ever ICC trophy with the T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean in 2010. During his stint with England, Flower had also coached them to No.1 on the ICC Test rankings, and more recently he had coached Maratha Arabians to the T10 title last November.

Flower replaces former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi, who was appointed chairman of India's selection committee on Thursday. This will be Flower's first assignment in the IPL.

"I am truly excited to come on board as the assistant coach for Kings XI Punjab and look forward to working with Anil Kumble this edition of the IPL," Flower told the Kings XI website. "The team looks great and we have a fantastic line up and top-notch support staff and we can't wait to show the world what the Shers are capable of."

Trainer Adrian Le Roux and physio Andrew Leipus, who had worked closely with Kumble when he was playing for India, will reunite at Kings XI. Le Roux and Leipus have IPL experience as well, having been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders set-up in the past. They will be assisted by masseur Naresh Kumar. Meanwhile, Charl Langeveldt was appointed the franchise's bowling coach. The 45-year old is currently working with South Africa in a similar capacity. Jonty Rhodes was named the fielding coach and Wasim Jaffer, who had retired on Saturday, the batting coach

Kings XI will also have a new captain in KL Rahul, after they had traded R Ashwin to Delhi Capitals. They will open their campaign in Delhi against Delhi Capitals on March 30.

‘Cancel IPL 2020’ – Karnataka Government writes a letter to central government; not ready to host matches in Bengaluru

A Bengaluru resident with a travel history to the USA was tested positive for novel coronavirus on Monday.

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is less than three weeks away from getting underway. The Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are scheduled to lock horns in the opening game of the season on March 29. But the coronavirus scare is likely to hamper the proceedings now even as the Karnataka Government has denied hosting the IPL matches in Bengaluru.

On Monday, a Bengaluru resident with a travel history to the USA was tested positive for novel coronavirus according to Karnataka Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar. Reportedly, the same resident, who has identified as a techie, came in contact with 2,666 people since his return from the US. While the person has been isolated at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) in Bengaluru, all primary schools in Bengaluru’s areas with IT companies have been shut until further notice.

The concerns have been previously raised over staging the IPL even as the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly recently confirmed that the tournament will go ahead as planned. At the same time, the BCCI sources also stated that they are monitoring the situation.

No IPL matches in Bengaluru?

Now if the reports in the local news channel Digvijay 24/7 are to be believed, the Karnataka Government has written a letter to the central government requesting for the IPL to postpone or suspend this year amid coronavirus threat. The report further stated that the Karnataka Government has also denied hosting the IPL matches.

Bengaluru is home to the Virat Kohli-led franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as the Chinnaswamy Stadium hosts all their matches. Earlier, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had raised concerns over the coronavirus outbreak and felt that the IPL can be organised later.

“There is always a possible danger of spread (of contagious diseases) when large numbers of people gather in one place… Such (IPL) events can always be organised later,” Tope had earlier said. With Karnataka Government also denying to host the matches now, it remains to be seen what stance will BCCI stake. As of now, things are not looking good for the upcoming season of the IPL to go ahead.

Coronavirus scare: Plea in Madras HC against IPL 2020, Karnataka government seeks advice on matches in Bengaluru

News of the PIL filed by advocate G Alex Benziger comes just 2 days after the Maharashtra Health Minister confirmed that discussions are on in the government on whether to postpone the IPL 2020 due to the growing number of cases in India.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • IPL 2020 is scheduled to be played between March 29 and May 24
  • Majority of the IPL matches will be played in 7 of the affected states in India
  • BCCI boss Sourav Ganguly confirmed to India Today on Monday that the IPL will not be postponed

APublic Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Madras High Court on Tuesday, seeking a cancellation of the Indian Premier League's 13th edition due to the coronavirus outbreak in India. The cash-rich T20 tournament is scheduled to be held between March 29 and May 24.

The PIL, filed by advocate G Alex Benziger, is likely to come up before a division bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Krishnan Ramaswamy on March 12.

This comes just 2 days after the Maharashtra Health Minister confirmed that discussions are on in the government on whether to postpone the IPL due to the growing number of cases in India.

"As on date, as per the website of the World Health Organisation, there was no specific medicine or to prevent or to treat the COVID-19," the petitioner said.

According to the petitioner, the coronavirus was spreading all over the world rapidly and creating a huge epidemic disaster. The petitioner said he had sent a representation to authorities not to allow the BCCI conduct IPL T20 cricket matches. As there was no response, he filed the present plea, the petitioner added.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar has written a letter to the Centre seeking advice on what needs to be done about the IPL matches that will be played in Bengaluru.

"I have written to the Centre saying there are IPL matches scheduled to be held in Karnataka, and that Maharashtra has already taken a decision in this regard. We have asked for the Centre’s guidance on what action we should take," Karnataka Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar said.

More than 50 people have been contracted the virus in India with Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Ladakh being the states affected so far.

Majority of the IPL matches will be played in 7 of the affected states in India over the course of two months, starting with the opener between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede stadium on March 29.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is trying everything in its power to hold the IPL on the scheduled dates with president Sourav Ganguly even confirming to India Today that the tournament will not be postponed and all necessary precautions will be taken by the board.

"It's on...and BCCI will take all protection (against coronavirus)," Ganguly said when asked how the board was dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.

There have been suggestions about holding the IPL behind closed doors as the matches will be available on television as well as streamed live on digital platforms.

However, a senior BCCI official said that having the IPL behind closed doors is not an option.

The problem with IPL is that all franchises more or less have fan engagement activities, which is a part of their sponsorship commitments.

It is still not clear whether franchises will curtail the number of fan engagement programmes that they organise during the course of the tournament.
