Still no IPL 2020 schedule as Covid-19 protocols in Abu Dhabi raise concerns

https://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fi%2Fcricket%2Fcricinfo%2F1230541_1296x729.jpg&w=920&h=368&scale=crop&cquality=80&location=origin&format=jpg

With just over three weeks to go for the start of IPL 2020, there is still no clarity on the schedule of the 60-match tournament, to be played across the UAE. The delay in announcing the fixtures list - which the franchises had been told to expect by August 20 - stems from Covid-19-related travel restrictions between the emirates.

There has been a spike in infection cases in the UAE, and mandatory checks have been ramped up at the border, making travel into Abu Dhabi more time-consuming than before. ESPNcricinfo understands that the IPL Governing Council members who are in the UAE have been speaking to officials of the Emirates Cricket Board - headed by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE's minister of culture, youth and social development - to try and get the matter resolved urgently.

It's not only that the tournament is likely to be split - the plan is to host 21 of the 56 group-stage games each in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and 14 in Sharjah, with the playoffs in the first two emirates. In addition, Abu Dhabi is the base for two teams, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, who will have to cross the border several times.

Though officials of the BCCI and IPL Governing Council have so far not commented on this, it seems to be no more than a matter of logistics, of synchronising team travel schedules so they comply with Covid-19-specific border entry regulations. Matt Boucher, the CEO of Abu Dhabi Cricket, believes the border issue, however, should not be too big a problem if everyone concerned follows the protocols put in place by the BCCI (for the event) and of the UAE government.

"At the border, it's either a DPI test or a PCR test, and it's purely to protect the population of Abu Dhabi. Many hundreds of people are using the border every day, and it's certainly not a hassle or an issue," he told ESPNcricinfo. "It just has to be, of course, tailored into the event schedule with rotational testing. But the teams need to be tested in accordance with the protocols of the event, the UAE government, and the BCCI protocols for the event. And if those are in line with the testing procedures at the border, then the facilitation will take place."

The way the UAE authorities want it to work is for all team members - players and anyone else travelling into Abu Dhabi - to return negative tests 48 hours before they get to the border. After that, with VIP lanes and police escorts in place, the delay shouldn't be as much as some people fear, Boucher felt.

"If Sunrisers Hyderabad is staying in Dubai, and playing in Abu Dhabi on a Wednesday, the team rotation for that test needs to take place 48 hours before they travel to Abu Dhabi. And they can then travel seamlessly back to Dubai. It shouldn't be a sticking point.

"The match schedule and the testing of the players need to be aligned. It's not an easy task, it needs to be thought out, it needs to be calculated, but the safety of the players and others is the most important thing. It's not an international border, it's a safety mechanism."

Similar logistics will apply for the Abu Dhabi-based teams, Boucher said. "For example, if Mumbai are playing in Dubai on Wednesday, then 48 hours before that match they need to have the PCR test to return from Dubai. That will be facilitated by a VIP lane and Dubai police escorts and Abu Dhabi police escorts. Upon their return to the Abu Dhabi border, the police will already have all the negative test reports, and they will seamlessly come through the border via a VIP lane."

There have also been murmurs of some teams not being happy about playing games in the afternoon heat, with matches starting at 2pm local time - ten double-headers had tentatively been penciled in by the IPL Governing Council when they announced the decision to shift the tournament to the UAE. Whether that is still a sticking point or not remains to be seen.

IPL 2020: Daniel Sams to replace Jason Roy at Delhi Capitals

https://a2.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fi%2Fcricket%2Fcricinfo%2F1212778_1296x729.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=crop&cquality=80&location=origin&format=jpg

England opener Jason Roy is understood to have opted out of the 2020 IPL due to personal reasons. Roy, who represents Delhi Capitals, ESPNcricinfo has learned, will be replaced by Australian left-arm fast bowler Daniel Sams. The development came on the back of ECB announcing on Thursday that Roy had been ruled out of the T20I series against Pakistan due to a side strain he picked up this week.

While Roy would become the second Englishman to opt out of IPL, Sams will be the second fast bowler Captials have hired after the auction. Recently South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje replaced England allrounder Chris Woakes.

This will be Sams' first time in the IPL. The New South Wales quick made headlines for Sydney Thunder at the 2019-20 Big Bash League where he finished as the tournament's highest wicket-taker. That performance earned him an international call-up for Australia's white-ball tour of England in September. The tour, comprising three T20Is and three ODIs, will be played between September 4 and September 16, with the IPL starting three days later in the UAE.

"The IPL is a huge platform for any cricketer, and back home, we all follow the tournament extremely closely every year," Sams told the Delhi Capitals website. "I feel fortunate to be a part of it this year, and I'm thankful to the Delhi Capitals management for giving me this opportunity. I can't wait to join the rest of the players in the UAE."

Roy, who was bought back by Capitals in the most recent players' auction for his base price of INR 1.5 crore, is understood to be unavailable for this season. Neither the player nor Capitals have made a comment on the development.

In 2018, Capitals (then Daredevils) bought Roy for the first time at the same price, but released him for the 2019 season. During his time with Capitals, Roy played five matches scoring 120 runs at a strike rate of 127.65, with 91 of those runs came in his first innings of the tournament, but only 29 across his next four.

Roy has had a difficult 2020 summer with the bat, scoring 24, 0 and 1 in three innings during England's ODI series against Ireland. He then returned to county cricket, making 4 and 14 against Hampshire in the four-day Bob Willis Trophy.

Sams, a smart buy
Roy's absence will not hurt Capitals who made the play-offs last season for the first time since 2012 on the back of the success of their top order packed with Indians - Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant and captain Shreyas Iyer. Each of those batsmen played at least one match-winning innings in 2019. For the 2020 season, Capitals have another top-order option Ajinkya Rahane, who had been traded from Rajasthan Royals where he was the captain.

Sams could be a smart investment for Capitals who were previously lacking a left-arm fast bowler after trading New Zealand strike bowler Trent Boult to Mumbai Indians following the last IPL. Capitals also lacked a good fast bowler at the death, a phase where Sams sparkled in the most recent Big Bash League where he finished with a record 30 wickets for the Thunder. Half of those wickets came in the final five overs for Sams as he picked 15 wickets at an economy rate of 9.73.

Sams will not be part of Capitals' training camp which starts in Dubai from August 29. The group of players from England and Australia, featuring in IPL, are expected to join their respective franchise in the UAE on September 17.

Sanjeev Churiwala, the chairman of Royal Challegners Bangalore franchise, said last week that the England and Australia players are expected to skip the mandatory six-day quarantine meant for the rest of the squad as long as they cleared the stringent testing process.

Reports: BCCI likely to announce IPL 2020 schedule on August 29

The Board members of BCCI and the Emirates Cricket Board seem to have resolved all the issues relating to the schedule.

Indian Premier League 2020 is expected to kick off from September 19th. All the teams have already reached UAE as the dates of the first and final match was announced earlier. The reason for the delay in the announcement of the schedule was known to be the recent spike in the number of COVID-19 patients in Abu Dhabi.

The city is one of the three venues of the tournament in UAE. The Board members of BCCI and the Emirates Cricket Board seem to have resolved all the issues relating to the schedule. There were discussions about the safety of players and the inter-city travel of the cricketers.

“Just small pieces of the jigsaw puzzles are remaining and we should resolve them and release the schedules soon. ECB chief’s support in the matter was of great help. We will incorporate changes in the schedule as per our discussions with the local authorities,” said one of the BCCI sources currently in Dubai as reported by Cricket Next.

First game likely to be played between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings

The regulations in Abu Dhabi are much rigorous than the other cities. Every person entering the Emirate has to be tested for coronavirus. Each rapid test would cost AED 50. But the protocols seem to be changing for the IPL franchises.

The players from Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders started training in Abu Dhabi. The regulations regarding quarantine rules have been relaxed for both the franchises from 14 days to 7 days. The schedule is expected to come out on Saturday (August 29), however, a few days back, Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma revealed that the first game will be played between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings through a congratulatory text for MS Dhoni.

The cash-rich league has been shifted to the UAE as the situation is not appropriate for such a big league to be conducted in India. The pandemic is under control in UAE and that made it the first choice as a makeshift venue. This is not the first time the exhibition is being played in the middle east country, due to general elections, IPL’s first leg was moved to UAE in 2014.

Members of CSK test positive for COVID-19

The Super Kings, before their arrival in the UAE, had held a five-day training camp in Chennai.

Multiple members of Chennai Super Kings have tested positive for COVID-19, although the exact numbers are to be confirmed. Cricbuzz understands that it includes one India player as well as members of the support/coaching staff.

The team landed in Dubai on August 21 and upon completion of the mandatory six-day quarantine, were supposed to start training from Friday (August 28). However, with the new development, they have extended their quarantine period. Some of the teams have already started training while the others are set to begin soon, with the exception of CSK.

As per the Standard Operating Procedures that need to be followed during the IPL, all persons associated with the tournament would undergo a test upon arrival in the UAE. This would be followed by tests on days 1, 3 and 5 of their quarantine period at the team hotel, and only after testing negative in all three would the players be allowed to train.

The Super Kings, before their arrival in the UAE, had held a five-day training camp in Chennai. MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Deepak Chahar, Ambati Rayudu, Piyush Chawla and Shardul Thakur were all part of the camp, as was bowling coach L Balaji.

Lasith Malinga opts out of IPL 2020 due to personal reasons

https://a1.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fi%2Fcricket%2Fcricinfo%2F1231131_1296x729.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=crop&cquality=80&location=origin&format=jpg

Mumbai Indians fast bowler Lasith Malinga, the highest wicket-taker in the IPL, has pulled out of the 2020 season in the UAE owing to personal reasons. Australia fast bowler James Pattinson, who is yet to play an IPL game, has been named as his replacement.

It is understood Malinga's father has been ill and may require surgery in the coming weeks. Since Malinga wanted to be with his father at home in Sri Lanka, he opted against travelling with the Mumbai squad to Abu Dhabi last month. It was believed that he would link up with the side during the business end of the league, but now Malinga has pulled out of the entire tournament, which will run from September 19 to November 10.

"Lasith is a legend and a pillar of MI's strength," Mumbai owner Akash Ambani was quoted as saying by the franchise's website. "There is no denying the fact that we will miss Lasith's cricketing acumen this season. However, we fully understand Lasith's need to be in Sri Lanka with his family during this time."

Ambani also welcomed Pattinson into the set-up, saying he was the "right fit" for them. While Mumbai have Jasprit Bumrah and New Zealand's Trent Boult to lead the pace attack, they could still miss Malinga's vast experience. He is the second-highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket, behind Dwayne Bravo, and has regularly delivered at the crunch for Mumbai.

In the 2013 IPL final, Malinga ripped out Mike Hussey with an inch-perfect yorker in the first over of the chase and then removed Suresh Raina for a duck next ball as Mumbai secured their first title. In the 2015 final, also against Chennai Super Kings, Malinga bowled MS Dhoni for 18 to help Mumbai clinch their second title. More recently, in 2019, Malinga nailed his signature slower dipping yorker to trap Shardul Thakur off the final ball and wrap up an unprecedented fourth IPL title for Mumbai.

"At that stage [in the last over], I wanted to go with experience because Malinga has been in that situation before a million times," Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma had said after the narrow win.

In contrast, Pattinson is yet to make his IPL debut although he has been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in the past. In all, he has played only 39 T20 games, taking 47 wickets at an average of 24.12 and an economy rate of 8.25.

Pattinson, however, has recent form on his side. In the Big Bash League (BBL) earlier this year, the 30-year-old claimed a career-best 5 for 33 for Brisbane Heat against the Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba. In that match, he worked up good pace and bounced out both Jake Weatherald and Travis Head. All told, he played six games in the 2019-20 BBL, picking up nine wickets at an economy rate of 7.97.

Pattinson isn't part of the Australia squad that is currently on tour in the UK. Having suffered multiple injuries, he last played a white-ball international in September 2015, but has worked his way back into the Test side. Pattinson was in action in the New Year's Test against New Zealand at the SCG.

When he joins Mumbai during the weekend, he is set to link up with fellow Australian Nathan Coulter-Nile. Chris Lynn will join the Mumbai camp after finishing his Caribbean Premier League (CPL) stint with St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. Defending champions Mumbai are expected to play last year's runners-up Super Kings in the IPL opener.

Mumbai Indians squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Anmolpreet Singh, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Mohsin Khan, Prince Balwant Rai Singh, Digvijay Deshmukh, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Anukul Roy, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ishan Kishan, Quinton de Kock, Aditya Tare, James Pattinson
