Big Data is an ocean...I can name 25 technologies out of my mind....Again Big Data on Cloud(AWS/Azure/GCP_ is another animal....This is again coupled with Data Lake,Data Warehousing,Data Mining,No SQL,Caching Engines..aa matram rakapote ela..

State batti, role ee state lo no chusuko, cost of living thakkuva unte move aipovacchu.

But devops lo ne undu better, cloud has future. Data engineer learning curve is tough

PS: I did my degree in data science but still am not working in it.

DEVOPS is best and easy and reliable option..Working on data side unless you are into ML and AI stuff it is of no use..Aa DEVOPS organic chart lo manaki edi vaccho chusi velladam better...

+1 am a data engineer. Spark(streaming/batch) scala/python  application development , hadoop stack( oozie, zookeeper, hive ,hdfs), Tez.No sql like mongodb, cassandra, hbase. sql familiar with oracle, teradata, informix, db2 . Shell scripting. version control tools llike git ,bitbucket.schedulars like airflow, oozie,uc4.apache nifi, sqoop ingestions. Kafka , apache storm. Not just limited to hands-on interviewers ask lot on spark and hadoop internal architecture, how does data gets distributed across the cluster, optimization techiques, security related .Then again visualization tools must ELK stack or Tableau. And again there is lot of learning need to upgrade lot of stuff everything is moving towards cloud.
