విశాఖపట్నం: అమెరికాలో చదువుతున్న విశాఖ నగరానికి చెందిన ఓ విద్యార్థి అక్కడి నదిలో ఈతకు వెళ్లి మృతి చెందారు. సీతమ్మధార ఎన్‌ఆర్‌ఐ ఆసుపత్రి సమీప ప్రాంతానికి చెందిన ఎం.ఎస్‌.కుమార్‌ విశాఖపట్నం స్టీల్‌ప్లాంట్‌ క్రీడలశాఖ డీజీఎంగా పని చేస్తున్నారు. ఆయన కుమారుడు ఎం.సుమీద్‌ (27) అమెరికాలోని పోర్టులాండ్‌లో ఎం.ఎస్‌. రోబోటిక్స్‌ చదువుతున్నారు. ఆదివారం సాయంత్రం 4.30కు క్రీటర్‌లాక్‌ నదికి మరో ఇద్దరు భారతీయ స్నేహితులతో కలసి ఈతకి వెళ్లారు. నది లోతుగా ఉండటంతో మునిగి చనిపోయారు.

Crater Lake drowning victim identified as 27-year-old OSU student

Sumedh Mannar, 27, died after jumping from this Cleetwood Cove rock at Crater Lake.

An Oregon State University student drowned after jumping off a rock into Crater Lake on Sunday afternoon.

Sumedh Mannar, 27, had jumped off a small rock cliff at Cleetwood Cove around 4:40 p.m., and did not resurface.

Mannar was a graduate student at OSU and was from India, according to Marsha McCabe, a spokeswoman for Crater Lake National Park.

McCabe said the cliff Mannar had jumped from was about 25 feet high. The cliff, known as “Jumping Rock,” is a popular recreation spot, she said, and was not a prohibited area for jumping. She said officials have not yet determined exactly why he drowned. In the summers, the surface of the lake warms up to about 60 degrees Fahrenheit, but the average temperature of the lake is around 38 degrees. Swimming is only allowed in the area around Cleetwood Cove and along the shore of Wizard Island.
